in reply to: 66 deluxe megahatch #7308
A couple old pictures of the engine before install. The first case I have painted. I usually leave the raw mag for cooling purposes….but this was a bright silver aluminum high-roof case. I didn’t like the way it looked.
in reply to: 66 deluxe megahatch #7307I spent last weekend block sanding. About to do it again. I should be able to poly all of my removables before Sunday. Which means I only have to sand them one more time before I can paint.
Stoked to be about done with paint. This type of work is hard to get through. Most people do’t realize that perfect-shiny-strait show cars are sculpted out of bondo. Every square inch has to be sanded about 5 times.
in reply to: Emilee’s ‘79 Riviera Camper #7292About to stack it up. Hydraulic lifter 2.0 typeIV…not sure I am qualified to work on something so new.
in reply to: Ultimate Vanagon #7291Did some heli-arc welding on the thermostat housing/flange. This is much better than a rubber hose that can kink or get damaged. We had the intake flanges cut at a local water-jet shop. Looking forward to welding up next week.
in reply to: BrownCloud KCW baja race team #7276Pat and I have been researching tires. I know BFG will provide fuel at pit stops if you run their tire.
But I don’t think they are the best. They are heavy. The maxis tires like it currently has are 32lbs. Less with the grooves, but I am curious if that is legal. Rotating mass is going to be a huge factor in the silt I think. But we also want to have a rugged enough sidewall to take on some sharp rocks.

in reply to: BrownCloud KCW baja race team #7275in reply to: Ultimate Vanagon #7274The tubes and boots for the intake arrived yesterday. Check out those “intercooler tubes”. The muffler is stainless 2.5″ Magnaflow 3 chamber xl….offered as a performance part for chevy duramax diesel truck.
Pat got a custom hose made for the Subaru power steering pump to vanagon. The picture kind of sucks, but you can see the pump is mounted backwards and acts as the tensioner, custom mount made by boxeer.
in reply to: Parkway projects #7257The 55 deluxe has been getting the treatment. I’ve done most everything on the bottom side that I could see or feel. Time to address the paint and interior.
Checked every bolt/nut I could get a wrench on.
Installed brake line mounts and axle lock plates(all of which were loose).
Detailed the torsion covers and spring plates(had paint over-spray).
Re-sealed the backing plate/axle.
torqued heads
adjusted valves
greased beam
new choke cable
new accelerator cable, linkage, and return spring
Replaced heater tube wrap and hose clamps with correct foil/glass and twist/cotter pin straps.
New german type battery ground strap.
in reply to: Ultimate Vanagon #7256This manifold we’re replacing with a simple pipe. Boxeer’s standalone is a simplified system without EGR or PDF. It has two electrically operated throttles that are no longer functioning with the removal of the emissions stuff.
in reply to: BrownCloud KCW baja race team #7255Stripped and in the dirty shop for body repairs. We need to fabricate some stuff before paint too. I think we’re all in agreement on 50% gloss dove blue?
Stuff to fab/fit.
-battery mount. Need to check rules on where they like to see it mounted and where the kill switch should be. Odyssey 925 battery looks like a good one? Surely there is some new lightweight lithium ion type battery available somewhere. I know those smart batteries are small.
-navigation and communication mounts
-fuel cell/fill
-misc safety items and spares/tool mounts
in reply to: BrownCloud KCW baja race team #7253Thanks John.
