Great story and ending (or beginning?).  Please keep sharing updates once you start to work this one in.

Thanks Gretchen!  I’m lucky my right arm is not affected.  Left hurts like hell.

My doc said the EXACT same thing as you, Kevin.  He said there are circumstances that make fusion preferable, but in my case he said he’d recommend disc replacement….should we get that far.

For now we’re going to try steroid injectons since I’ve responded well to those twice in the past, 2008 & 2012.  Fingers crossed it works again this time.

Steroid injections first…that worked well in 2012 for same to discs, and got 7 years of relief out of it.  Doc has some concerns about the bone spurs that have started to encase the 5/6 disc (where the little magnifying glass is on the scan), thinking that might limit how much the disc can “retract” back in.  If shots don’t work he said disc replacement or fusion, and he favors replacement at this point.

Good luck to you as well!  Hope you can get some relief.  Nerve pain sucks.

For the uninitiated, those are discs in the neck between C5-C6 and C6-C7 bulging outward towards spinal cavity and left side nerve roots .  Fuuuuuuu…..

Ha!  No minivans here….my wife refuses to drive one.

I’m lucky….my kids are the biggest advocates of taking the VW for a spin.

70 degrees and sunny, and the youngest mini-me asked if I’d take her to her ballet class in the Ghia.  Absolutely!

Here you go, Juan.  It looks like the easiest way to tell is the earlier bumper has an extra inch past the side captive plate as seen below (found on The Samba).  The shorter later has the captive plate almost at the bumper end.  It looks like Franz’s and yours are both later.  The good news is the longer bumpers changed to short in 67 (along with a wider redesign of the rear fender well, thus the shorter bumper length), so 66 and earlier should work and hopefully not too hard to find (as opposed to being lowlight specific).

I see reverse lights on that rear bumper….which usually means later model.  Minor detail but since Juan is building 100% stock I thought I’d mention…..early Ghia rear bumper blades are about an inch longer than later years (change in ’64 maybe?), so what you have there may stop short of reaching the rear wheel well.

How come you all are stoked on these???? Aren’t 66-67 Beetle rims about the same and not hard to find???????

Thanks for asking….I was wondering the same thing

I think the appeal is that they’re aluminum, like 10 lbs lighter per wheel?  If not then yeah, I’m stumped too.

A stock single carb on a 1914 seems like a recipe for the engine to be starved for air/fuel.  Sounds like the jet sizes have been increased, but you’re still limited on how much air can be delivered to each cylinder.  I don’t know a helluva lot about carbs but one possibility is you’re running so rich that detonation is being completed in the exhaust cycle.  Does your current setup require a lot of timing advance to get the engine to run decent, like over 32* total?  I suppose the one risk you have of the current setup is that it runs hot and you risk cooking it like Franz suggested.

That’s looking good.  It also looks like a huge pain in the ass to get right.  Nice work as always.
