So after researching these odd little buggies I have found that most were done prior to IRS and some had bus reduction box trans in them. While I was out picking up the car in Washington I found a guy with a stripped, gutted, pan halves removed, backbone of a pan from a ’61 bug with the original bug body tag and matching title.  So I drug it home too.  The reason being this thing is mounted on a shortened ’71 pan which mean I would never fit in it.  These bodies are crazy how everything either rivets or bolts together, no welds.  So all I have to do is unbolt the rocker panels, set the front and rear halves of the body on the new pan and make a new longer rocker that bolts in.  Instant leg room.

So I figure I will put the word out.  I am looking for whatever adapters they used back in the day to mount a bus reduction box trans in a bug torsion housing.  I know there are Johnson no hop kits that were made but I am having limited luck finding any.  I am sure creative old school off road guys made something.  Franz you always seem to have weird quirky crap laying around or know where to find it.  Got anything?

This is my inspiration of what I hope to do with mine minus the rake, I want it to sit level

I think Andy is tired of staring at Subaru motors with all the conversions he is doing and needs a completely ridiculous distraction.  Lucky he has my bus for that.

So…….I got a hair up my ass and was scrolling through samba and found an Empi Sportster about 3.5 hours away.  I figured it was cheap enough so why not.  I put my real deal 4 lug sprint stars on it to drag it home today. Not seen in the picture was the zwitter gas tank that came with it in the bed.  Originally it was built on a zwitter pan but the guy scraped it because it was too rusty and put it on the ’71 it is currently on.

I can only imagine Rusty rolling around the neighborhood and everyone whispering under there breath how bat shit crazy that guy is building a double decker bus.

John, just do it.  Build yourself something on the cheap.  I think a fastback would be sweet but probably heavy as hell.

No Subi for this beast, the stretched bus needed that.  I have wanted to build this bus since I bought it 5 years ago as a Shasta bus.  Now I will be happy if I can just make it my exploring bus.  I have a plethora of forest roads and isolated areas behind my house that I want to explore plus the countless ghost towns out here in Oregon.  It has a very stout built transmission with new everything.  Nice new mud terrain tires, a full length rack and a soon to be built custom front bumper made by me.

I think the double door is a little closer to making a trip.  I installed the new trans adjusted the spring plates.  Now I need to pull the front end and do some cut and turn action on it.

I like it when John does a race car, they always turn out nice.  The turbo ghia was bad ass.

I have a lot of metal for it but it is here in Oregon.   I don’t think BBB will happen due to the lack of funds and my lack of available time off.  I know Andy could easily make it happen, I just don’t have the coin to pay for it.  I still need to buy about $2500 worth of metal to have all that I need.  Also, all the rust free doors I have are here too.  I am going to try and get my double door going.  Perhaps that one could get me to BBB, maybe.  UFO motor, what could possibly go wrong?

Andy, let me know what you need for the engine area, around deck lid etc. I know we talked about you doing the battery tray etc while the vw motor was out and maybe doing anything else in the engine area so once the Subaru is in, it’s, good.  It’s just the rest of the bus that needs love.
