in reply to: JJ’s 58 Single Cab! #25868
I was just looking at their kits JB. Looks like they have they have two solutions now… I might reach out to Nate to see what he’d recommend
in reply to: JJ’s 58 Single Cab! #25867Also Will told me today he got the original title from the previous owner and it’s a 57… I guess we have to change this thread’s title
in reply to: JJ’s 58 Single Cab! #25865That would be huge! We went up to EVWest today to try to dimension their 65 single cab engine bay with their Faro 3D scanning arm but they were busy getting ready for SEMA so we still need those measurements.
We’ve been in contact with Volksagen North America’s Electric Research Laboratory up in Silicon Valley about a potential partnership and they seemed interested in our project. We sent them a list of items today that we’re going to need and they are going to get back to us on how exactly they can help.
Using the Tesla motor will entail using the Tesla transmission because they are packaged as a unit. This means that we will have to use an IRS suspension to adapt the axles. Which kit would you guys recommend?
in reply to: KCW randomness #25864Cool comparison on the velocity stacks Franz.. really gives studying fluid dynamics and head loss coefficients some context
in reply to: KCW randomness #25788in reply to: JJ’s 58 Single Cab! #25786Does anyone have the dimensions on the engine bay for a bus like this? Going to start to modeling how we’re going to fit the motor…
in reply to: JJ’s 58 Single Cab! #25272Yeah they recently designed a motor mount for a Porsche 911 with the 400 V performance Tesla motor
in reply to: JJ’s 58 Single Cab! #25200I had heard of what Kevin Sharpe was working on but I hadn’t seen that yet. Thanks for the good resource!
in reply to: JJ’s 58 Single Cab! #25149Super excited that JJ and KCW are on board! We’re still working on the numbers… this being an “entrepreneur” project they make us write out and prove every decision that we are making numerically and it slows down the process significantly, but I guess that’s what makes us engineers ๐ค. I really like the idea of a “fully reversible” conversion that requires as little modification to the bus as possible and includes distributing the weight evenly with the original load points so as to not overly stress the original suspension setup
in reply to: JJ’s 58 Single Cab! #24686I’ve seen that car Alykat! Pretty gnarly… I don’t think we’re going to build a ferrari beating scab plus he hinted that that build cost them $125,000 not including the cost of the car ๐ณ
in reply to: JJ’s 58 Single Cab! #24656Looks like my last post was lost ๐ but I think that the choice in using an electric motor is not so much about the technology but more because of the instant low end torque and dead reliablity. I went to EVWest last week and will go back this week to discuss options. Our current plans are to use a 240 v Tesla motor and design a motor mount to adapt future conversions to an IRS transmissions. What are your thoughts on IRS transmissions?
Another idea we had was that we could use the batteries from the truck to reduce ย power usage from the grid for companies to avoid power surge charges
in reply to: JJ’s 58 Single Cab! #23502I think we could make this thing more functional than stock! The choice of electric isn’t necessarily because of the technology but because of the huge low end torque and dead reliability. I’ve been gathering and sorting through ideas.
I like the idea of a solar array Ryan! Although it probably wouldn’t be able to provide sufficient power to practically charge it much it would look really cool.
I was talking with EVWest again today and we discussed designing a mounting system for them that would be able to adapt a Tesla 250 v motor to an IRS transmission.
This type of motor would be able to be serviced by any Tesla technician rather than any custom shit.
What are your guys thoughts on IRS trannys?
Out here is certainly the mecca but you guys at high altitude would benefit from it even more.
This single cab has so much potential that I really cant think of a better build. The resto is most certainly not a trivial task as I’ve experienced through my brother’s builds. Part of me wants to bring it out here and be working on it after class but the way this semester is looking I know it would just take me way too long ๐
in reply to: Colorado Roadtrips!!! #22619I like that idea Franz! Check out Shipwrecks down in Baja
in reply to: JJ’s 58 Single Cab! #21848Currently working with a team of electrical and mechanical engineers on designing a battery system for converting this truck to electric. We are running the numbers on a system of lithium ion batteries and super capacitors to increase acceleration and regen efficiency. I want to build a badass work truck with a triple RGB and store the batteries on a sliding tray down in the treasure chest for easy access. Something like this.
in reply to: KCW randomness #19783Happy Birthday Gretchen! Hope you guys are having a great weekend
