Great progress Pat!  That Gerson load bed separation panel is pretty nice looking.  Does he stamp in the dimple along the top edge that provides clearance for the latches that mount to the back of the cab?  From the picture, it’s hard to tell if the bulge is there or if it’s flat and the bulge needs to be added in place or before install?

Hey Mike, we can do that Porsche look no problem. You’re cool with ditching the puma shroud then? I think we touched on mechanicals briefly, but lets make sure we’re all on the same page. -transaxle smelled like burned oil…we should probably go through it, and rebuild the RGB with new bearings…but what gear ratios? I like .089 beetle 4th gear better than over-driver bus .082 4th….but if we do that, the ring and pinion needs to go up to a 3.88 or a 3.44. – Engine, we would usually go with a “baby tractor” 1914cc, fully dressed with heater boxes, sidewinder, and dual IDF webers. Painter’s Grinding in Denver build’s the long block out of your core with orignal case, crank, rods, heads, rockers, and flywheel. They upgrade the rockers to solid shaft w/swivel feet. Engle 110 cam, 8 :1 compression, balance and full-flow…..good simple reliable power. Suspension fully rebuilt to stock height with disc brakes. We could install adjusters on the beam…but I don’t think they are necessary. Stock shocks or fancy bilstiens? Stock 15″ bus whees with 215/75 BFG all terrain tires?

    Amazing progress gentlemen!

Hey Franz, I’m ok with ditching the Puma.  John mentioned that you’d recommend losing my tins anyway.  I’m sure there is someone out there that needs a low profile shroud for a 356 replica, Bug, Ghia, or something else with a space challenges.  I might get a few dollars for it by selling it.  Just set it aside.

Definitely looking for the RGB’s to be rebuilt.  The drivers side had a leak anyway.  As you think it would be a good idea to go through the transaxle, please do it.  I’m going to lean on your expertise for gearing.  This is going to be a flat-land truck (Texas) and will not likely haul anything heavy again., so I’ll go with your reco considering where it will be used.

Reliable and simple power sounds perfect, so baby tractor is a go.  I noticed you guys typically go for the sidewinder exhaust, what do you think of the Vintage Speed exhausts that have more stock-ish dimensions?

Suspension rebuilt at stock height (don’t need adjusters) with the front discs I sent sounds just right.  Stock shocks should be fine for where I plan to run the truck.  Assuming the 15’s I sent with the truck can be cleaned up and painted, I’d like to keep those.  BFG?  I like the look, but are they going to be too aggressive for a stock-ish looking rig?

That’s great looking set-up!  It might be a little difficult to tilt up an oil can in a double cab engine compartment.

I’m not surprised.  I suspected they weren’t worth reusing (or sending for that matter).  I’m wondering how many parts are reusable on that motor

I like the looks of that motor Franz did for Pete and the one on the “67 Wrong Side Driver” thread.  I like the 356 look.

Understood on the pause.  You gotta get the buses ready to role on the mega trip(s).

I’m glad the motor and tins arrived.  Now you can marvel at the zebra-striped puma (shroud).  🙂  It’s an endangered species that is hardly seen in captivity 🙂

The lowered one was a great looking ride.  I took that pic at one of the OCTO events when I was living in Long Beach.  I don’t think the lowered-with-Fuchs look is for me.  I want it to look stock-ish.  Plus, going up driveways sideways sucks.

Here’s the front of that Kombi.

I’m glad everyone likes the choice!  I’ve been driving my wife nuts for months about the color.  If she had to hear “Should the truck be grey?” again, she might leave.  I looked up L21 Pearl Grey on The Samba and found bunch of info.  I’m not a paint expert, so I don’t know what is legit or bullshit.  Here’s something I found:

Begin with DGLVDG201195 (Beige) and adjust it as follows:
    D700 – White 219.6 grams
    D708 – Yellow 66.8 grams
    D702 – Black 81.6 grams
    D729 – Red 21.0 grams
    D704 – Blue 1.0 grams
    D703 – Black 6.0 grams
The total is 396.0 grams is about a quart I think.
The computer printout of this also added under Remarks – “Variant formula as of d VOC: 3.9/% lead: 0.00/MSDS:DGL1 – Tinting Gurde: DGVLDG201195”
I think that if you have a PPG guy look at these numbers he will understand…

I also PM’d the guy on TheSamba that built the 56 Kombi with the black emblem/bumpers, to see what formula he used.  It’s a 8-9 year old thread, so I’m not sure if he’ll get back to me.

I’m ready for the slings and arrows to fly on my color choice… 🙂

I do like L31, but want to go with L21 Perl Grau.  The truck was originally L345, but I don’t think the light grey has enough pigment to show of the lines of the truck and the expert body work you guys have done.  Perl Grau has a commercial look, but also has color to it (like Dove Blue 🙂 ).  The bumpers, wheels, emblem will be the stock white (silver white???).  Similar to these rides, but with the white bumpers, wheels, and emblem…Grey Bus

Hope you all have a happy New Year celebration!  Sounds like 2019 is going to be off to a fun start with BBB, Scottsdale Auction, and Shasta (jealous of all the trips).

I don’t know how OG the tins are.  The shroud looks like a puma (the short square kind).  Here’s the motor when I removed it, right before trailering the truck your direction.UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_10c5

I loaded the rest of the tins up in box and sent’em via USPS.  I don’t know if they are worth the cost of sending, but you can let me know.

That looks way better, and easier, than jackin’ around with the other corner with the messy patch and dings and dents.
