Yeah, I think so. That was a Brazilian steering box.BBWBParticipantJanuary 31, 2019 at 2:51 pmPost count: 825
I’d like to see one of the rack and pinion kits from the UK installed. I hear it’s the “Cats meow”.

^^^Good to know. Although, I thought most racks have an adjustment to dial in the pinion and rack gear mesh. I was made aware of this from my dad years ago. I had a used Ford Aerostar van that had a new rack installed right before I bought it. Wandered all over the road, had no center. My dad told me how to adjust the rack. Improved the steering 90 percent. Still had the very soft Ford power steering, but after that, the wife could keep it in her lane. 😉

No adjustment on these kits; they aren’t really a proper rack – they still use the centre pin and tie rods etc. I’ve also driven homebrew rack conversions but they usually alter the amount of lock to lock turns, which is disconcerting when you’re used to driving a stock bus. An original steering box in good order is perfectly adequate and I think a joy to drive.FranzKeymasterFebruary 1, 2019 at 8:51 amPost count: 3539
I’ve seen those CE kits for years….looks like a lot of extra weight and BS to accomplish the same thing.
I’ve got no issues with how a stock steering box drives. They are 3 1/2 turns lock to lock.
For whatever reason the Brazilian steering box is more like 7 turns lock to lock, makes them hard to drive. Especially at speed….which is probably part of the problem Mike was experiencing.
We need to locate an original box on samba and have it shipped to Wolfgang for rebuild. We are fresh out of good cores here. Do you want to handle that Mike?mdubgParticipantFebruary 1, 2019 at 9:57 amPost count: 294
Franz, that would be great. I can get online and find shit with the best of them. My concern is I’d find shit and not something useable.
In case you were wondering, I don’t have, nor care about the column lock that has a hole on my old one. I think that is some kind of Sao Paulo theft deterrent and doesn’t seem like it would be effective what so ever.FranzKeymasterFebruary 1, 2019 at 10:23 amPost count: 3539
Cool, Maybe I can get wolfgang to just sell us the core and rebuild together. I’ll let you know.
And I agree on the column lock.BodgocoParticipantFebruary 1, 2019 at 11:19 amPost count: 61
If it helps you out I have a spare on a nose clip I bought years ago. Bus is going to be awesome!FranzKeymasterFebruary 5, 2019 at 8:39 amPost count: 3539
