Awesome to see the progress!
I’m excited to see you going through the front-end. Previously, driving down the highway was a series of suggestions made to the steering wheel. Sometimes the bus would comply with the suggestions, sometimes not. When the brakes were touched, it was a wild ride. It was sketchy to say the least. It will be nice to be able to track down the road without a bunch of exaggerated wandering and with those front discs I sent.
Speaking of the front-end, what’s the verdict on the steering box? During teardown I think John mentioned that we may need to source one.
in reply to: Mikes Dual Cab #29803I talked to the folks that I ordered the exhaust from. Unfortunately, they shipped the set-up with heat risers, so you should see the system with the wrong part first. They are sending the hook-ups without heat risers separately, so they should show up a little later.
in reply to: Road trip pics!!! #29652Love the Central Coast! I went to school in San Luis Obispo (SLO). It’s a little off PCH, but Montana De Oro State Park is an awesome place (it’s like 4 miles south of Morro Rock). I spent many days hiking, biking, and surfing in the Great White infested waters out there. In my book it’s worth an excursion. Then you gotta get a tri-tip sandwich and beer for lunch at Firestone Grill in downtown SLO. Have a great trip!
in reply to: Mikes Dual Cab #29635I want to make sure that I have the most reliable motor possible. Tell Painter’s to go ahead with the new case.
in reply to: Mikes Dual Cab #29524Sweet! What’s up with the old spoked wheel in the blast booth? Are you mocking up wheel/tire options for the Double Cab? 😎
in reply to: Mikes Dual Cab #29417Yeah, not much giant boulder hauling on that rig. Probably gonna be the same for me once KCW resets the clock on my DC.
Franz, I agree, I think it’s closer to a mouse gray (a little more brown in it). The Pearl Grey is more of a cement color.
in reply to: Mikes Dual Cab #29407I saw pictures of that DC in pictures from the weekend (I wasn’t there, just living it through the interwebs). I also have seen it first hand at OCTO, when I use to live a mile away. (pictures below). That bus is beautiful!
It’s hard to tell from pictures if it’s the same. It’s definitely close.
in reply to: Mikes Dual Cab #29366Exhaust is ordered and will be shipped to KCW.
in reply to: KCW randomness #29352Go time!!!
in reply to: KCW randomness #29335That’s an awesome write-up. Wishing y’all luck at the auction!
in reply to: Mikes Dual Cab #29288Thanks for taking a look at the exhausts. I’ll order one up and get it sent to KCW.
I’ll take a look at tires online in that size (215/75).
I’ve been looking at pictures of VW trucks with the BFG’s like Cole posted and I’m still pondering those. I haven’t made a decision.
in reply to: Mikes Dual Cab #29007Cool. Thanks Cole. The BFG all terrains do have aggressive side wall…but the tread pattern is mild, no road noise. We can do regular street radial tires too if you’re worried about the look. The vintage speed exhausts are nice and quiet. I can install one no problem. You should order one and have it shipped here. We don’t have anything set-up with those guys. On the transaxle, I think we should go with the 3.44 ring and pinion with .89 4th. That should get you up to 65-70mph cruising speed.
Franz – I don’t want to order the wrong exhaust from Vintage Speed. Can you take a couple minutes and take a look at their stuff?

I think it’s the “Classic Super Flow VW Split Window Bus Exhaust System” (Part#155-706-052SF) without heat risers. It’s the one that looks like an updated version of the stock exhaust. If you can confirm that is what will work with the “baby tractor”, that would be great!
I do love the BFG, but I think the look is going to be more offroad than I want. What tire would you reco for a more stock look?
I’ll go with your reco on the gearing that works with the “baby tractor”. 70mph sounds good for an old DC.
in reply to: Mikes Dual Cab #28998Pat you get going early, even on Saturdays!
Is that the last of the green metal? Finishing up the rear end next?
in reply to: Mikes Dual Cab #28957Hey Pat. Here’s a link to a guy making the dimple (https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7637349). I’m not sure this is best way to do it, but it’s something. In the youtube video at 7:45, he shows how he did it. There are also pictures farther down. The thread is a pretty good read with videos, but the whole build takes hours to read thru.
Here’s another double cab build thread with a good picture of the dimple. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7637349
in reply to: Mikes Dual Cab #28939John – Yikes! It didn’t seem to be making a bunch of noise when I was driving it around. Was that the passenger or drivers side? Can those be found to be replaced?
Pat – I can’t tell from that picture, but I found a picture of the “dimple” from a Single Cab build that was talking about (see below). Just want to make sure that it’s there before paint, so that the latch will fit in that rail without scratching things up.
