I figured as much.  I’ve seen that floor up close and in the gas compartment, it was pretty pockmarked and there were a few pin holes that I was aware of.  It’ll be nice to have a solid new floor.

You guys are amazing!  Watching from afar on the old interwebs, I get updates 6-7 days a week, of serious work!  Great updates!

When I got the DC a few years ago, I popped open the “smugglers compartment” because the cab reeked of gas after a fill-up.  Turns out the gas filler neck was leaking where it meets the tank.  When I opened up the compartment, it was stuffed with housing insulation and painted with tar.  I spent a couple weekends cleaning all that crap out.  Not fun!

Here are the before pics:

I cleaned it up and rattle canned it for a short-term fix.  Here is a cleaned up picture.  Can’t wait for the KCW long-term fix picture.

Since this truck is a 1960, it doesn’t have the overflow tube coming off the filler catch, that drains below the floor.  Any spilled or sloshed gas ends up in the cab under the rear seat.  What do you think about installing one of those tubes.  I know it’s not stock, but it might be a good add for the future health of the vehicle and the occupants (reducing vapors).  Also, no one would see it, or know it’s there in that seal compartment.

Thanks for the tip!  I’m going to see if I can get the OG VW part off, but now I have a plan B.  I may just order a pair so that I can replace them on the old gates, before selling them.

Watching all the work on my DC, got me jonesing (no pun intended) to turn a wrench.  Started a bike project.  I decided to run all the lines and cables down the handlebars of my Harley.  I’m adding 14″ apes with chrome controls.  I don’t want any external lines, so I’m putting on an internal throttle and a hydraulic clutch.

So far, the hydraulic clutch is installed, not yet plumbed.

Pulled the tank to get access to the wires and throttle cable.  Once I get the bars delivered, I can measure how much I need to extend everything.

Will, thanks for the close ups!  I had no idea that there were a bunch of patches on the bus.  Looks ok, few spots to cut out, but lots of good metal.

From looking at the inside of the rear corners, I knew the they were off a later truck, because they had the larger tail lights with the holes welded up.  It wasn’t until I dropped it off that Franz pointed out that the current hole location might be a bit high for a ’60.

When I did some exploratory work on that patch on the drivers side long panel, the filler was 3/4 of an inch deep.  That previous patch was sloppy work, but the filler was overkill.
