That’s a good idea. I could see getting in on a little sprint car. I have been building wings for my Hayabusa hill climb car lately and reading lots of stuff on sprint car wings. Fascinating and stylish looking accessoriesΒ  that really don’t do much until you get going fast. I bet a little sprint car would be fun to tweak and dial settings with…Β Β Β  ….And I too am trying to keep myself away from the hobby store like a recovered crack head would avoid a score πŸ™‚

Just some random pictures of an R/C bi-plane I’ve been building for about a year. It’s a DeHavillind DH82 Tiger Moth. Will have a 114″ wing span. Engine is a 60cc four stroke gasser in-line twin.

Thanks Rusty. I’m about a medium in the size spectrum of R/C. My current limitation is storage and transport. Moving these bigger planes around my tiny shop and to the field is almost a pain. The reward is better visibility in the air.

Thanks John. Means a lot. But being a jack-of-all-trades, and MASTER-of-none, is a more appt description. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Do you skin some of the surfaces in aluminum and if so, what gauge?Β  The canopy frame looks awesome as well as the rest of the plane.Β  Really nice, detailed work!

Short answer, yes. The pics below are my 1/3 scale J3 Cub. I basically use thicker aluminum for cowls. I’ve been playing around trying to hammer and shape it. For that stuff I use .025″ or thinner.

    m_IMG_2154m_IMG_2155m_IMG_2180m_IMG_2182

The two top pics are roof flashing that I used on the forward fuse. The last two are engine cowl pieces made with the .025″ thick. With both types, I used a sharpe and drew squigglies, then heated the aluminum until the lines disappear to anneal it.

There is a guy in South Florida I think that I see on the R/C we sites, that is building all aluminum planes. His stuff looks awesome. I’ll see if I can find some pics of his stuff.

That’s really neat!Β  I bet some of those domed shapes could be press formed into a rubber mat.Β  It would be fun making those little shapes.Β  Harbor Freight made a 1″ wheeling machine a while back, not sure it it’s still available, but I’m sure that would really come in handy for some of the more subtle shapes.
