Got the last of the removables off the cadaver, E brake handle, shift rod, rear hatch – all the fun stuff 🙄 Got to the hole under the seat pedestal, if transporters have a hell hole like a 914, this is it. Spent most of 2 days in this little spot, found more rust above my bulkhead repairs when I could see behind, but it’s solid now.mtnbusParticipantDecember 29, 2017 at 8:52 amPost count: 865

Still moving forward. Lots of little odds and ends. I stripped my roof with a pneumatic polisher and a 6″ stripit disc. I can see the metal now and feel it, started beating out the big hammer wallops and things are beginning to go back in place 😮 . With the new floors, pillars and inner structure the carcass is solid again, rings like a drum when you bang on it or flip it back rusty side up 😆 not like the wet noodle I started with.volksaddictParticipantJanuary 3, 2018 at 6:38 amPost count: 516
I had to fab a piece of engine seal lip. First I picked up a piece of green metal scrap and bent it around a steel rod about the size of a front torsion bar. The green was hard to bend and didn’t look right so I picked up a scrap of black stuff – the cheap Danish panel material, bent like butter! The Colombian metal is thicker and stronger than the euro stuff 🙂
I need a spare tire mount. Franz can you hook me up? I’ve seen you make 2 of ’em now.VwfoolParticipantJanuary 3, 2018 at 7:36 amPost count: 252
Making some crazy progress. It is inspirational.John JonesKeymasterJanuary 3, 2018 at 7:56 amPost count: 5841
thats one big messed up roof.. 😎FranzKeymasterJanuary 3, 2018 at 8:18 amPost count: 2968
Lookign good. Yeah I can make a spare tire mount…but it looks like you know what you are doing. I have one here to copy. The original has strengthening ribs that I can’t reproduce.volksaddictParticipantJanuary 3, 2018 at 8:20 amPost count: 516volksaddictParticipantJanuary 3, 2018 at 8:26 amPost count: 516
thats one big messed up roof..
Yeah, it is. Visions of those pallets of new roof pressings go through my head when I look at it. Someday maybe someone will put a new one on this bus, probably one with windows and a sunroof 🙄 But this is my roof, I own it. Anything is an improvement. It will work.volksaddictParticipantJanuary 7, 2018 at 6:47 amPost count: 516
Picking off little items on the shell, more patches on the driver’s seat pedestal, must have been a rats nest in there, fixed the cargo floor edges that I messed up 😳 , lots of grinding. I finally made a rocker to cargo floor clamp, can’t remember how many times I could have used this before just didn’t take the time to weld some scrap on some old vice grips 🙄
Had not 1 but 2 tenants flake out on me and drop out of their leases in December leaving me with dirty broken houses 😈 Damn crazy women bustin up their families and cutting into my vw time!
Kids, be careful with your prescription anti depressants!mtnbusParticipantJanuary 7, 2018 at 7:02 amPost count: 865

Yeah it’ll be ready for BBB… 2020 😀
These are the remains of the rubber brake lines, Stamped VW. Bet they are original! This thing didn’t travel too many miles.JbParticipantJanuary 7, 2018 at 9:27 amPost count: 544

bus is shaping up killer, ton of work!volksaddictParticipantJanuary 13, 2018 at 7:19 amPost count: 516
Doing some work on my roof 🙂 Wood from Clara arrived this week 😀 😀
While you guys are in bus heaven can you get me a couple measurements, maybe a pic or two of a subhatch hole without the trim? I need the dimensions of the hole and how far it begins up from the rain gutter, how high the lip rises above the roof, the lip that westfalia made when they bent the roof hole. Is that lip just 1 thickness of metal – not folded over?mtnbusParticipantJanuary 16, 2018 at 10:34 pmPost count: 865
my friend Chris Dollar in Pagosa has a 58 sub hatch. Can probably get info from himJohn JonesKeymasterJanuary 17, 2018 at 6:06 amPost count: 5841
Great Idea Jeff!!!!! LOve it!volksaddictParticipantJanuary 19, 2018 at 6:40 amPost count: 516
This project is on semi-hold while I remodel a couple houses 🙄
I do need the top hole dimensions if anyone has a fliphatch bus around.
I took my lid to the local tin bender shop- the inner reinforcing ribs are rotted thru and I don’t have a bench break, figured they could bend up a whole new one without much trouble and the guy agreed, but his interpretation of a lid was not what I gave him or at all what westfalia was thinking 😈 Don’t take auto body parts to a hvac shop.
You want something done right you gotta do it yourself… or hit up KCW
