Hi y’all. Just returning from my Colorado Roadtrip! Twin Lakes and FairPlay via Amarillo. Spent a week and managed to make it up Elbert and Quandary. Camped every night in y’all’s BLM land… for nothing. Y’all’s ability to camp just about anywheres you damn well please, is… outstanding! Brown Burro pancakes didn’t suck either…

When the 4 in Saggy Butt Fred fails, that’ the route I’m going. Don’t think RMW makes a kit for late bays though.

Sunny the wonder truck lives!!! Got the engine back in today and went for a 30 minute putt… NO LEAKS!!! Ended up having to use the stepped seals  along with three spacers. So far, so good. Tentative delivery to Wild Bill 21 JUL… and it’s going on a trailer. Now onward to Saggy Butt Fred and the type 4…

Well, there I was… Got everything hooked back up, turned the dizzy counterclockwise a red hair and… boom, fired right up! Got out of the cab idling and saw a massive oil leak. Fresh, clean 5W-30… about half a quart. Looking like the oil cooler blues, fosho. I got several different types of bushings from Brothers, evidently picked the wrong two. Gonna pull it next weekend and see what’s up. All advice appreciated.

Sourced a long block from Brothers. Got all Franz’s shiny stuff bolted/torqued back on. Engine tin and heat exchanger/muffler configuration were the most tedious. Finally got it stuck last night. After work today… we’ll fire it up! I took a few pics but, y’all have seen this before.

Getting my sweet ass bay window readied for a “peak bagging” trip to the Ten Mile range. August. I think we’ll do just fine once we’re out of Texas and the 100s.

Okay, so I got the engine out, a lot heavier than I remembered. Getting old is a bitch. Counted the flywheel teeth, 109. Six volt right? Everything on the bus is 12V… I’m clueless. The locals are wanting to sell me a dual port 1600, but say that my bell housing will have to be ground… I don’t want to do that. What engine can I put back in that will fit the current bell housing and all the shiny stuff y’all bolted on? I want to use as much, to include the tin, as possible. I know y’all have put dual port engines in some busses with the reduction boxes. How’d y’all do it? What do y’all recommend?

Thanks Franz. I’ll be pulling the 1500 this weekend and will know more then. Popped the valve covers as per recommendation… looks good to me? A little more oil than the type IV, but nothing grossly evident. I can’t begin to describe how nice it is to wrench on a spotless, detailed engine!

BBWB, thank you for the offer. If this engine turns out to have shit the bed, I’ll be hitting you up. For now though, I’m excited to watch you turn it into a “better half”. Fingers crossed.

I always enjoy learning new things, and today I learned a little more about VWs. The GREEN light is the oil pressure light!  I cooked that little engine all by myself. What a dumbass… I should have read my Muir a bit more. Anyhow, having a local shop do a teardown and rebuild. Price of an education I suppose… Keep y’all posted.

Not sure yet Franz. My decision not to rebuild the long block could be a factor… I’ll know in a couple weeks.

Well shoot… back at the house (Belton TX), but came in on a flatbed last night (AAA sucks… fuck AAA). Made it to Slaton TX (718 mi). Engine issues… I’ll know more when I pull it. I had an unbelievable, unforgettable trip. Climbed Red Mountain like a boss. I hadn’t been in that part of CO in a long time. Shot a few pics… I’ll have the girls show me how to post em up.

A huge “thumbs up” to Baird!! I thanked you sir, every time I set my coffee cup.

I’ll be at the Texas Classic, but in my bay… don’t judge…

What can I say… blown away! The level of craftsmanship, the hospitality… first class. From the airport pickup in a classic ‘51 Chevy to the climb over Red mountain in this sweet rig… badass. All smiles and “thumbs up”… from everyone on the road. Thank you KCW!!!

I’ve been tying ends and doing detail type stuff. Not much else left to go. Been dreading installing the fiberglass heater tube wrap…but it looks like the day is here. DSC00797DSC00799

WOW!! She’s looking “danger close” to being Done Done! Excellent work y’all. This old boy’s getting excited!
