Hey friends.  I always seem to have some sort of personal project going on.  Like many on the forum, my interests include vintage VW’s, Porsche, European scooters, old houses, hot springs, camping, snowboarding, motorcycles and an endless litany of all things old and interesting.  Hopefully you’ll enjoy checking out some of my projects as much as I like working on them and I’ll be able to pick up on some solid advice with some of these projects moving forward.

Probably the most interesting find I’ve had come my way is this 58 Samba:

An older guy pulled up to my shop on a scooter wanting to know if I wanted a VW Fox that was sitting in his yard.  I told him that I wasn’t really interested though I had a friend who might be able to remove it for him.  While I’m writing down my friends contact info, I casually ask if he happens to have any more VW’s at which point he tells me that he has a 21 window Deluxe!  Needless to say, I gave him my contact info instead and went to his house the next morning.

The Bus was in an old garage which hadn’t been opened in years.  We couldn’t get into the garage, but we were able to pry the man door open enough for me to see a portion of the long side.  I thought that I was looking at an original blue/white 21 window and struck a deal with the owner prior to digging it out.

It was two days of digging, moving a shed, moving a broken down truck and excavating to get it out, but my friend and I got it up on the trailer and back to the shop.  Needless to say, I had to contain myself when we pried open the doors and I saw that Deluxe, press-bumper and corner windows.  It went from incredible barn find to Holy Grail status.

Here’s Mr Sanford, the second owner, saying goodbye.

I got it back to my shop and sifted through piles of raccoon shit to find some of the odds and ends which ended up in the back of the Bus over the years.  Two days of pressure washing, Super Clean and a gallon of bleach.  It was shit stew coming out of this thing.

Thanks Mark!  I feel pretty lucky to have been in the right place at the right time.  Even the blind mouse gets the cheese on occasion.

Seems I can’t post more than one photo per post.  Is that the standard?

I’m going to pick away at some of the smaller items since I can’t fit it into the shop right now and Winter.

Really stoked that I have the original bumpers to work with.  I started with the back.  Typical Beetle exhaust mod and a little worked.

I was able to use the section that they cut and bent up after a little hammering.  The hardware was a mish-mosh of screws, nuts and bolts and I’ll need to do a bit of research to get the right parts.

TIG’d up the cut-outs then twisted, bumped and filed until it was straight.
