What’s up with this car? I heard something about “how to hot-wire a vintage VW”.

Just signed back in for the first time in a while. Haha yeah the bug has been playing split duty on daily driver for me. I will trade off leaving one at work. Will gave me a ride down the other morning and I realized I didn’t have the key 😬. Franz helped me hot wire it over the phone and off it went.

It’s been running poor. Same issue that I talked about last time I posted. Been trying to track it down, but it’s very intermittent. Every time I think it’s fixed it’ll come back on the next drive. Going to install a pentronix ignitor II and low ohm coil this weekend.

ALSO ordering new tires for it. Any recommended setups? It currently has 2″ narrowed beam 145R15 front and 205/70R15 rear cranked down a notch or two. I was thinking of running 185s up front, but would that require a narrower beam?

Thanks guys! Any recommendations on the rear? Are 215s too big for a 1600?

    205/65 will match nicely.

Nice car!!!!   I forget Willy painted that rig here too…. 😎 I think that was his first paint job maybe?

    Get it running right?

Did you figure out the electrical problem? I bet it’s something dumb like a loose connector or a cracked/corroded wire.

I’ve had a few similar issues with bad spark plug wires lately. Only causing a momentary miss.

Glenns been back and forth between Kentucky and Illinois a lot lately, so we haven’t had time to swap his new distributor in yet. Hopefully he’s ordered tires though… he’s down to the threads on the current front ones! 😳

Just makes the car more fun to drive when the threads are showing! Makes it a drift car

Don’t have any pictures yet, but I installed the new coil and distributor this past weekend. The bug is running great now! I think it was probably the condenser, but I’d rather upgrade the whole thing while I’m at it. Seems to have really good power but bogs a bit if you gas it at low rpms. I also had pulled the carb apart and cleaned it so might need to go back and make more adjustments.

I tried ordering 145/65s from TireRack and they said that they will not sell them to me due to it not meeting weight requirements!? Anyone ever have that issue before?

Couple updates and questions for you guys. The Pentronix low ohm coil (0.6ohm) died after a week 😒 Replaced it back to the bosch. After it left me on the side of the road, I haven’t been commuting with this as often. But now the Vanagon has been having its share of mechanical needs and I need this back in action. It needs a new battery and I was wondering which one you would recommend. Looking at the Optima batteries, which one would work with the stock ground strap?
