Long block together. Camshat @ 4 degrees advanced timing. We ordered aluminum 3/8” pushrods from Smith Brothers yesterday. 10 63/64”  long. Lighter valve-train weight for single high rev springs. Valve to piston clearances measured at .130” and .140”.

This is what .032” deck looks like. It’s close enough to the head to keep the carbon off of portions of the piston face.

We learned from diesel.ryan at Crandon that bumping around with other cars may cause the apron to knock a valve cover off….and drop all the oil + more bad stuff. 🙂

I welded sheet metal tabs to the inside to help keep the valve covers from getting pushed off, and tie spots for the bail springs on the face.

Them some real nice valve covers…  😎  You can spend a whole day on something as simple as valve cover…  But it can make the difference in finishing a race and not losing a motor!!!  😎 😎 😎

I don’t know which race I am going to do first.. KOH is still a month away…  I’m still not sure about them entry fee’s..

Ready for Penngrade and race fuel. A1 performance stepped stainless header is nice. 👍
I have always been told to put two shims under the distributor drive gear…but never really what to measure or check?

Lately I like to shim the bottom of the distributor down so that there is only about .025” play. You know the engine’s direction of rotation is trying to push the distributor drive gear up.

Smith Brothers pushrods arrived and we were able to do break-in today. Promod national champion John Redding brought over some fuel and we fired it up. It stayed way cool. Probably because of the fat jets in the carb from Crandon, Wisconsin. And the 116 fuel.

Everything went well, the oil strainer and sump plate are clean, the valve adjustments stayed the same. I checked leak-down on all 4 cylinders at 98% thanks to Total seal rings. She’s ready to race.

The Wilson book says the distributor shaft play should be .02″ to 0.05″ so your .025″ fits pretty well with that. I believe the two washers are there because one washer can spin with the drive gear and can wear the case. Even if one washer spins at reduced rpm two washers reduce this effect again. Ie, if one spins with the drive gear (even at reduced rpm) it spins against the second washer which spins at reduced rpm again? ….

Good days on the class 11.. Friday and Saturday!!!  And I plan on taking full advantage of Sunday too…. 😎 😎 😎   Studded all my drums and got em on, Audrey got out pumper system started.. Gonna make some new spring plate retainers this morning.. and then put a engine in!!!!  😎  I feel really good about the car…. She’s solid again!  I’m gonna keep her that way!!!  😎

No grinding or polishing in the port Any camshaft, gear, valve spring retainers, lifters are allowed. Beehive springs allowed, Valve spring seat diameter in head must remain stock. May use any valve but must be stock 45 degrees and stock dimensions and 8mm stem size. no titanium valves allowed. including valve guide must use stock VW 1600 rocker arms. The rocker arms may be resurfaced to permit the use of swivel feet. No other grinding or changes may be made to the rocker arms. No roller or needle bearings will be allowed as part of the camshaft or as an interface between the rocker arms and the camshaft. Any push rods and push rod tubes. Any valve adj screws. Clips on rocker arms may be wire tied. Rocker assemblies may be subject to post race inspection.”
