Over the June long weekend (The Queens Birthday) our club, Volkclub Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, were lucky enough to spend 3 nights away in the beautiful Outback town of Hopetoun, about 160 mile north/west from Bendigo & right on the edge of the “Big Desert”

We have about 100 members in the club and most like their VW’s either slammed or lifted, this weekend was one for the lifted crew!

As well as quite a few boring modern 4×4’s, but the stand out’s were:

Jimmy Fingers in his TLE Fastback……….

Mike in his unrestored Country Buggy……

Myself in my buddy’s Baja (83yr old Kev insisted we took it)………..

And my Dad’s latest offroad creation**non-VW** his 6 wheeled, Toyota Hiace truck…..

Rounding out the VW’s We had a lifted 2WD T3 and an Amarok with us also…..

I know it’s not VW related, but thought I’d share a little about my ’68 year old Dad’s truck,

He’s spent the last 2 years building it and the Camper Shell from scratch, starting off with a wrecked 4×4 Hilux and an old Toyota Hiace……..

It’s now a 6×4, with a 3.8lt Buick V6, T400 auto, with locked diffs and airbags over leaf suspension, with a slide on camper shell with solar power, toilet, shower, kitchen, heating and cooling etc etc

They have just sent off on their first adventure, a 6 month trip up through the center of Australia to Darwin to visit my sister, then will continue to follow the coast to the west, getting home just before Christmas. All up about a 7000 mile round trip.

They’ve covered about 1500 miles in the last week, still another 800 miles before the reach my sisters place.

    Thanks Pat.

    As in how old is he? He’s 68 (I’m 37), he’s had over 300 VW’s.

The most at one time was 96!

He raced Baja’s in the 70’s……..

Built this Baja in 2000 and crossed the Simpson desert (400 odd miles of Sand Dunes)…….

Plus numerous other, bugs, type 3s, kombis etc etc

    Na Franz, 6×4.

Front 2 axles, are Hilux with detroit lockers, leaf spring, airbags on rear.

Rear axle is lazy with cantilevered leaf springs and air bags over the axle.
