Thanks.  I dropped the car at your shop today, along with a list of the specs on the car, as I understand them to be.  The engine could have been changed from these specs, since it went through a couple of later owners.  So it is possible that it has steel push rods instead of aluminum but I seriously doubt it.

The engine has been machined for hydraulic lifters, but after one collapsed the first owner put in solid.  Not sure why.  I’m still in contact with him and he thinks I should put in hydraulic again.  What would be the cost for that?  For now though just adjust the valves correctly.

As for the CV clicking I mentioned to Pat, I don’t think it could be the angle since these are 944 cvs, plus it didn’t click when I took it too this guy and didn’t bind this afternoon when I jacked it to full droop.  First owner just mentioned clocking of the CV’s, something about the lobes on the races.  If you search “Clocking” in the Samba HBB forum there is a thread about it.

They were set at 0 with the engine cold.  The mechanic that set them tried to tell me that they were steel push rods, but I know they are aluminum.  Then he changed his story and said that 0 is OK with aluminum because of the type of rocker I have.  I just feel like he didn’t want to admit his error.

Here’s the bug.  I bought it in December and have been working to get it back to the original Class 11 look-alike build which was messed up by the next owner.  This first photo is the builder’s work; Sxuxrxf on Samba.  Second photo is after the next owner messed it up.  Third photo is recent after I lifted it back up.  It has type 4 CVs so driveshaft angle is not an issue.  I’ll get it to your shop eventually cause stuff needs done that’s over my head.

OP again.  Barney’s says that Bilsteins might be my best bet as they sell shocks designed for VW’s.  Alternatively I might see if the lower shock mount can be refabricated so I can use a Rancho 9000.

OP here.  I should have mentioned that my shock mounts are stock.  Old shocks collapsed are 13″, but might need to collapse 1/2 ” more, extended 18.75.

The are an OK fit but need to be recharged and/or rebuilt (FOA’s), but they have no cushioning at top or bottom, more of a ball and socket type of solid mount.

They try to plow the passes before the 4th.  But July 4th is a zoo on the trails.  Yeah bring Bubba and Rusty, or whoever.  There’s room for a few tents on my property but plenty of room on the BLM land 1/4 mile from my camp, but maybe not on the 4th of July.  There are toilets there too.  I’ll be down to your shop to have some work done in a month or so and give you more details on my camp.

Agreed.  But how about if we base at my property in Silverton.  We have a camp trailer we pull up for the summer, and there is plenty of tent space.  Plus we have a shower house.  We are 8 miles up towards Animas Forks at 10,000 feet.

I hope to get it back the way it was.  I am having the 3″ lift spindles reinstalled, and will be installing Atomwerks raised spring plates instead of notching.  I’m planning to run 215/75R15 28″ tires instead of the 29s that Sxuxrxf had on them. I need to find some 5.5 x 15 4 lug steel VW wheels to replace the porsche mags on there now.

Road/Dirt.  The engine was built for a bus with low gears with a cw crank and other stuff way beyond my understanding that would allow it to cruise at 3800 RPM.  So I think with a 4.37/R/P and a 1.09 with I should be able to go 65 with 29″ tires, which is the speed limit on the highway I will be driving.  But I’d ultimately like it to be capable in the desert and mountains too. No racing.

Thanks John.  I didn’t make it far up Imogene with my Thing. It did go over Ophir, Cinnamon, and Mosquito and I recall people pushing on a couple of those.The Think was stock except for tires which were probably about 29″

My rig is at a shop right now so I don’t know if it has the 73 SSC tranny it came with originally.  The 4.37s were added later.  If it is a SSC I am thinking about regearing 1st through 4th to 4.13, 2.46, 1.5, 1.09 which would give it a crawl ratio of 18.5:1 vs the stock 14.7:1.  That would give it the equivalent of a 4.78 R/P.  I’ve been told that just changing the R/P to 4.86 would be too weak, but then again I don’t know if the 1st through 4th gear changes are weak.
