in reply to: My endless projects… #46314
I got the front end back on the ground. Still need to put in the steering box, tie rods, etc…
in reply to: Diesel starter conversion blocks! #46277I’ve seen a few Porsche’s with “hi torque” starters and they have started to completely chew up their flywheels. So much so that we pull them off and put a more stock type on. Have you had any issues like that with these diesel starters?
I don’t think those early cars had a hardened ring gear. I’ve seen some pretty chewed up ring gears on VW’s with stock starters. It would probably be a good idea to run a hardened ring gear if you’re going to have a hi torque starter. IMO. If you have a hot rod motor that needs one of these starters, you probably are going to run a lightened flywheel, so that would be a good opportunity to have a hard ring gear installed.
in reply to: KCW randomness #46234That looks like fun. What is it? Doodle Bug?
I think you have a contender: https://www.minibikegambler.com/
in reply to: KCW randomness #46226I wish I could do that. I’ve got scooters that have taken me years to paint…

in reply to: Je$$e’s (aka Tintop) Projects #46164I’ve found that if the Bus doesn’t sell, you’re asking too much.
I sold a 63 panel. 58 23 window and a burned up Vanagon in under a week. Price it less than what they are supposedly selling for online and watch it go down the road. Price it what you think it’s worth and you’ll be looking at it for years to come…
in reply to: Motorcycle racket #46163That throttle lock looks complicated. My old BMW touring bike had a little thumb wheel to increase pressure on the throttle grip. You just snugged it down a bit if you wanted cruise control. It was never tight enough that you couldn’t twist it back if need be prior to loosening the thumb wheel.
in reply to: My endless projects… #46115Glad Randy is well… Super Glad his shop is going strong… I’ve almost been here 20 years… Sport Car must be like 50 years old by now…. 😎
They have been around forever. His family started the business as a VW used parts business so he has been breaking down and working on cars since he was a kid. Hell, he’s even got pictures of him hanging with and racing with the Bergs back in the 80’s. Most definitely a lifer.
in reply to: My endless projects… #46113After I carefully marked and drilled the grub screw locations on the torsion bars, I realized that I should have marked and drilled once the trailing arms were in place. Fortunately it worked out perfectly and the arms mated up very nicely to the bushings.
I need to work out what wheel studs I’m going to use, then get this thing back on the ground.
in reply to: My endless projects… #46110in reply to: My endless projects… #46109I got the beam wrapped up, painted and installed. I had to massage the area around the shock tower ever so slightly, but that may be because this thing looks like it was crashed at some point.
in reply to: My endless projects… #46106Randy is doing well. I’m stoked to have such a good VW shop in my town. While I fumble through this beam/Beetle build, Randy is there with good parts and advice. I had the wrong urethane bushings, didn’t have the longer bolts for running caster shims, was missing the ball joint eccentrics, and wasn’t able to get the ball joints in with my tooling. One trip to Randy’s and done. Much like you guys, Randy has been there 100x before and is happy to share his expertise and parts. He’s the last shop standing around here and for good reason.
in reply to: 52 Standard sleepin at KCW #46103Nice greenhouse and green house. Funny, my house is the exact same color. They must have had a sale on that color back in the 50’s.
in reply to: KCW randomness #46102Looks like a blast. Also looks like you need a bigger sway bar. 🙂
If you’ve never been to some of the RMVR (Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing) events, you should check it out. They have a strong FV group and the rest of the cars are cool to check out as well. I hope to get the Okrasa on the track at some point in it’s life.
in reply to: My endless projects… #45988I also added these lower receivers for a tow bar setup.
I went to install the new ball joints but I was having a difficult time with my makeshift tools in the press. I ended up taking them to Sportcar Service where Randy has the proper tools for the job. I narrowed the torsion stacks and re-drilled for the grub screws. If all goes well it should be in the car by this afternoon. I’m hoping the narrowed tie rods and sway bar fit since I went another 1″ on the beam than I originally intended.
