Well looks like I drew the short straw….  I’m on your Vert Kelly..  We want it done and gone!!!  In YOUR garage!! I dunno how Kelly ends up having the most drawn out projects that ever run through my shop…. Over and Over again..  We gotta figure out the formula to fixing that!!!

So.. How’s texas these days?  How’s that awesome Barndoor doing??

I am going to keep this thread on the top… 😎

First thing, unbolt and shim body to try and make these doors fit…  😎

Hi John & wife, Franz and Pat,.. I hope everything is going better and better 🤙

Last time I was in KCW picking up my KG, this amazing car was arriving to be completed, when I saw it, I thought, wow really nice project, so every time I have visited the KCW web, the first thing I do is to check this Yukon vert,.. I really want you to finish it, because this car deserves it, I can’t imagine when you send it back to the road again and the owner drives it 😀

One of the weird things I found back in the day was that when doing convertibles, top tension was as critical as material fitment. Too much tension on the top could actually distort the body shell and cause door gaps to pull in at the top.  Not saying that was the issue here, just remembering  one of the things that use to drive me crazy and made me less fond of verts.

Verts suck!!!  Which is what makes them so awesome when they are finally done and right!

I figured out yesterday that the little aluminum shims that go inbetween the arms on the top frame.. they actually push the top forward and you can use them to make it easier to shut the top… 😎  😎 😎  I dunno why I just thought of this 20 years into my work…. duh.. Never looked too close at it.. always let Doug just creep through it slowly…    Oh Doug… He has too much on his mind!!  When you have too many things running through your head, you can’t concentrate on one thing..  You can’t problem solve the problem right in front of you, cause of the other 25 things he is really thinking about…  He is just as god made him… so I guess we just gotta “work” with it.. 😎 😎 😎 😎

Another thing.. each peice of this top frame and door jamb bullshit needs to be there for it to all come together and work!

I tinkered with this some this weekend.. Door’s close and open easy, top opens and shuts easy, top and doors, really have nothing to do with each other… like it’s supposed to be.. 😎 😎   SO FAR,,, glass…. hate it… 😎

Just spending a few days with this project that has been roadblocked now for a year…  I think Doug ONLY thinks about the material side of a convertible project.  Like if I ONLY thought and cared about the outer skin paint on a door, and never addressed, hinges, fits, or inner workings… Which is what I address FIRST on a door project….   😎 😎 😎  Doug is awesome.. but doug is doug..  Gotta know doug to know what I am talking about.. and I mean all of this with “ALL DUE RESPECT!”

anyway… Getting the right hardware is important in a project.  Maybe more important to me than some.. and more important on early stuff than later stuff for sure!… and you know how you learn what hardware goes where?  Buy building and owning early cars!!   Taking early cars apart!!!  you know how you get extra original hardware??  By being in business for over 20 years, doing the same fuckign things from day one!!!  😎  In the same location, same owner, some wife…. 😎 😎 😎

You see that rust seeping out of them hinges I lubed up and loosened up so the damn top would move freely… 😎 😎 😎 Those aluminum pieces are critical right there. 😎 😎  You should put the WHOLE kit together before you expect the whole kit to operate right… 😎 😎 😎

OK.. wanna see how to clean up your mech;s the right way!!

Abrasive cleaning,  it is almost always, my first step in restoring anything,   Then soak joints, hinges and anything that moves in clean lacquer thinner… till it moves and operates freely, and seeps all that RUST out of it…
