Last night we camped in a weird little spot off a dirt road right before St George. On the way down to the spot, we questioned the steepness but decided it was okay.. On our way out this morning it was way softer than expected.. after the third or fourth try and letting some air out of the back tires we were able to make it out! I’m sure the engine bay doesn’t look so clean anymore 😎
oh man!! Hahaha sounds like fun now you made it through!! 😂Pat KModeratorJuly 2, 2021 at 9:45 amPost count: 2067gianniParticipantJuly 2, 2021 at 11:46 amPost count: 20Gretchen JonesModeratorJuly 2, 2021 at 2:21 pmPost count: 1044

It’s as cute as a button to see a Girl working on a car😁😁😁😁😁😁😁 Two is outstanding!
So Willy… I was thinking this morning, sorry for my late help… but now that you have exhausted all the other culprits of a foul running engine…. my thought is exhaust seat and or stem. That lash cap fell off for a reason. Your valve stuck open, lash cap fell off, piston tapped it back in, almost in😁😁😁. That was the ticking you were trying to exsplain to me😁😁. I’ll bet if you take your rockers off and lay a straight edge on the stems, that one is short. Same thing I have done Twice. You can’t run stock heater boxes on big 2 Liters in the summer.Audrey JonesModeratorJuly 6, 2021 at 7:39 amPost count: 554
Well, Will pulled his engine yesterday so he could investigate deeper what’s going on… pulled the heads off and they looked good but one side was super tight… 🤷🏻♀️
got some assistance from Craig and Sandra too!!! 😁FranzModeratorJuly 6, 2021 at 8:43 amPost count: 4286WillyModeratorJuly 8, 2021 at 3:02 pmPost count: 1436
Ya, whoops. I’m way behind on updating this so here’s a dump.
Gianni and I drove this thing out overnight last week but lost a lash cap and the rocker loosened up outside Baker. Re-did the valve adjustment and got back on the road. Drove till 5:30am when the sun was coming up and pulled down into a canyon to sleep. Turned out the hill we drove down was way softer and had to air way down after the 4th try. Hung out in St George and went the rest of the way starting at 3am. Gianni was a super helpful co-driver.
Made it to KCW without any other issues but decided to give it a full tune up to be safe and put the new 1 5/8” heater boxes on. Found the lash cap in the oil sump.
We re-torqued the heads and it seemed like we got a bunch of turns on them. As we were leaving for a river trip in Salida my bus got super hot and slowly died in front of the shop, so Audrey graciously let us ride with her to camp in Buena Vista with Greta.
When we got back Audrey, Gianni, Craig, and I tore into the motor to inspect the heads and pistons because we could hear a small clicking noise when turning it over. It was also super hard to turn by hand. Everything looked good though, so said what the hell and put it back together, re-torqued heads in sequence and did valves blah blah. Stabbed the motor back in, seems to be running fine now? No weird noises, not too hot. JJ took it for a spin and it did great. I’ll drive it some more next week and figure it out.
For now it’s just chilling at KCW while Audrey, Gianni, and I are doing another float trip this weekend. This time for 3 days down the Green River!
