Nice!  Looking forward to seeing Tom’s engine come together.

    Agreed.

I went out looking for parts this morning. Trying to install 40hp tin on a 1914cc.

The first problem I can see is a doghouse oil cooler is not going to work with the Porsche linkage. Not sure that stale-air heater boxes would work with a doughouse fan shroud anyways.

So that means we have to stay with an old type cooler. Or maybe delete it and run an external. Hmmmm… I liked that fancy oil cooler that Pete had.

Here’s their contact info if you want to give them a shout: https://www.airflow-systems.com/category/motorsports-oil-coolers/

They are very expensive (prices have gone up a good bit since I bought mine), but Porsche guys with performance modified engines seem to love them.  And after custom fitting an external cooler the price may be close to wash.

That stale air shroud will be awesome.    Nice, refined look.     The oil cooler……..wow……that would be nice.   Nice to see that block on the engine stand.     I think the oil can bracket should have arrived yesterday too……..

Looks like the stale-air heater boxes are going to work. They bolt up to 1600cc upper tin just fine.

I got a picture of the subaru guy messing with vintage VW stuff.

I wanted to go stale air on my kombi motor….haven’t got this far yet. Can you stuff a wider DP fan into a 40ho shroud? Is only reason can’t get a DH cooler to work cause of the reverse P linkage?

    id wanna run a t4 on mine….

If you you run a dog house cooler with stale-air heater boxes….I think you would push extra air through the cooler with the heat on? And maybe not enough air over the cylinders?

I don’t think the two systems are compatible .

I found a fan shroud that will work for this engine today. Got the heater boxes on, a few flanges and I think this a-1 will fit.

I think its going to work…..but the oil cooler situation.

1- Run it like original with the cooler in the shroud -non doghouse….probably the best/easiest option

2- Take the cooler out of the fan shroud and run an external cooler…more of a race car set-up, this is how we did Creig’s. Makes it easy to remove the fan shroud/generator in the car…..With the heater system we don’t have much room above the transaxle for an external cooler/fan (and not really an idea spot)…so that gets into doing some fancy front mounted stuff.

We can always add an external cooler later if it needs it.

I’ve been pretty sold on the doghouse 40hp fan shroud honestly.    We have been calling a bit of an audible on the motor since our original plan was to keep the motor from my ragtop which is cool for me.    But if we make an external cooler, it will be more like the original set-up we had in my rag too.    If we actually did keep my original motor (like our initial plan), we would be needing to fab an external cooler anyway.      I’d opt for option #2 since we can keep the shroud like our original plan, linkage will work nicely without the oil cooler and its similar to my old set-up.    I am open to more discussion on this…..and I am hoping for an engine plan that is a stunner like my old engine that got sold with the rag.

Of course, this engine stuff is VW college level stuff……I’m a junior-high schooler.    I’m pretty sure that I shouldn’t be the source for making suggestions.

Did I just get approval to cut a bunch of big holes for oil coolers and lines? like creig’s… let me get a 4″ hole saw 😆 ….

    Sawzall works better, Franz.

Mocked up. Ready for to fine-tune tin fits and exhaust. I’m going to install the stock early non-doghouse oil cooler in the fan shroud. We can decide on the external oil system later….that stuff is a pain in the ass to do right. Simply jamming a oil cooler with a fan above the transaxle is a waste of time….and an annoying noise. This engine is way fancier than the one you had in the ragtop.
