I took these off of a 56 beetle I had years ago. They polished nicely. Defiantly show some wear, but I think they are serviceable.
I will admit playing arts & crafts today was kinda fun. Brush painted emblems in one shot enamel.
Polished and installed the butterfly latches today also. The mirror arm is bugging me…it’s a 54-55 unit that came with the bus. If we run across a correct “upward” arm I’ll buy it.Juan 59 DDWTParticipantFebruary 3, 2020 at 8:52 pmPost count: 297

Looks like your about done with that one Franz!! Cole was talking about it this weekend! He’s still planning on flying in and driving it home..FranzKeymasterFebruary 4, 2020 at 7:35 pmPost count: 3372
Yeah, really close. I’m doing paint detail and finalizing stuff….The empi starter failed today, strange, a new one will be here Thursday.
Wood slats for the bed and hoops were ordered and hopefully built last week. Maybe have them next week? Then it’s done done.
kf pedal pan and a vented 105mm generator strap for 12 volt to look like 25hp from my friend Sam in Spain.FranzKeymasterFebruary 5, 2020 at 7:41 pmPost count: 3372
I spent the day doing paint detail. All the nooks and crannies. Touching up a couple paint chips. Not much left to do at all:
-install new starter
-install wood bed slats
-install hoops and wood and canvas
-Final buff and detail
-Door frame seals. I’ll need to do some research on what people are using for the the outer seal to the body. It looks similar to an early early beetle hood seal. I have an original sample 🙂
I cleaned up the tool kit, jack, and crank start handle…Will put under the seat.mtnbusParticipantFebruary 6, 2020 at 7:37 amPost count: 1033

Fly in and drive sounds nice to me😎FranzKeymasterFebruary 7, 2020 at 9:04 amPost count: 3372
Proper drive yesterday evening. Got through all the gears. Shes a ripper! I’m stoked on how it drives, stops, and steers.
Seems like the front suspension is sagging a bit. Maybe has a broken spring?..hard to imagine, it looks like it was just rebuilt. I could disassemble and flip the springs if the ride height bothers you.
Installed generator vent strap, and JB welded an original fuel pump top to the pierburg unit.
Dome light wire clips. Original BD single cab on the right. Beetle felt channel clip on the left worked.
Doing some research on door seals and fuel tap extension this morning. Noticed that the hole is marked with reserve auf and zu.tlambertParticipantFebruary 7, 2020 at 12:03 pmPost count: 295

Been waiting weeks to put the final touches on.FranzKeymasterFebruary 7, 2020 at 6:03 pmPost count: 3372
Beetle hood seals worked on the door frame tops. We need to figure out vent wing seals, I tried cargo door seals and they were too fat.volksaddictParticipantFebruary 7, 2020 at 6:51 pmPost count: 573
PITA! Figuring out that old stuff. But you are doing such a great job on that old truck!FranzKeymasterFebruary 10, 2020 at 8:33 amPost count: 3372
Is that this truck? Late mirror, black bumper, painted hubcaps?ColeBModeratorFebruary 10, 2020 at 9:26 amPost count: 1502
No. Different truck I found. Just thought it was cool. Looks non smooth gate to mesilasParticipantFebruary 11, 2020 at 1:17 amPost count: 1
^^ if you dont allready have this piece of literature, you need to get it, it belongs with the sailing bridges single cab!! bid to win!!
1360 yonge street was the first ever dealership in canada (see photo below, this is the same photo cole posted awhile back in this thread. the photo is from a vw information magazine dated 1954). the sailing bridges single cab would have been sold out of that dealership. there is a very good chance it could be the single cab in the showroom (as stated earlier), but it would be hard to be 100% certain…but either way…it’s damn cool!!
i’m by no means an expert, but i especially love the canadian history of old vws, and this single cab is very special and significant!! the fact that it has been verified to have been on the first shipment to canada is incredible. very cool stuff!! please be sure to share more of its history if y0u have it (pics, brochures, paperwork, birth cert, etc…within reason of course 😉
also…major kudos to john, franz, pat and the whole kcw team for all their hard work and dedication to get this one back together and on the road! fantastic!!
ps…i think sometime in the near future this single cab will need to plan a vacation back to canadian soil and be re-united with the other vws that were on that first shipment…the deluxe that pat hall pulled out of ontario (now at jake’s for a resurrection and it’ll hopefully reside out west somewhere), brians old 52 (that is now owned by open road vw in burnaby)…plus there is apparently another deluxe beetle out east and another unknown somewhere…get ’em all together for a canadian reunion ‘eh!! 😎FranzKeymasterFebruary 11, 2020 at 8:57 amPost count: 3372
So awesome to have such history with a vehicle. It has been a tough one to assemble that is for sure.
Cole told me that they plan to drive it and use it. Setup with the late model drive train.ColeBModeratorFebruary 11, 2020 at 9:12 amPost count: 1502
A rendezvous would be awesome! Love the history coming out with this bus and the deluxe pulled a couple months ago.
A copy of that brochure came with the truck. But always good to have another copy! I’ll keep an eye on it. Thanks for the heads up
