Hahahahaha! Well…it would be fully capable but I’m not too sure our employer would appreciate us “playing” with it. It’s a purpose built aircraft and unfortunately for us, aerobatics aren’t the purpose.

At what point does it go from an RC airplane to an unmanned airplane? That thing was huge!

They are all unmanned…There are different types of unmanned airplanes though. The bigger ones are flown with a pilot in a ground cockpit taken off and landed like a full scale airplane but the pilot is looking at a screen instead of line of sight…smaller ones are usually taken off and landed via an RC pilot but flown via a Ground Control Operator. The Ground Control Cperator can fly the aircraft with a mouse and has a screen in front of him with all the vital info needed, altitude, airspeed, fuel level, wind speed etc etc. Then there are the recreational RC guys that just fly visual line of sight.

The big cub I posted with the turbo prop will be taken off and landed manually by myself or Red and once in the air and stable will be handed over to the Ground Control Operator (GCO) and flown on its mission or test…once it comes back it will be taken back by the “safety pilot” as we are called and recovered or landed. One of the Safety Pilots jobs is to maintain situational awareness while the aircraft is airborne so if there is an issue they can take it over and recover the plane…not always the easiest thing to do when the aircraft is miles away and at 10k feet  😉

The usual demarcation line is. (A) If its controlled by human hands and within eye site; RC. (B) If operated autonomously and out of visual range; UAV(unmanned aerial vehicle).

Just randomly flipping through you-tube vids and come across this one. Back in 2007, I went to work for a company called Advanced Ceramics Research(ACR). The name is misleading because in addition to ceramics manufacturing of armour, drill bits, and medical applications, we also built autonomous aircraft. One of them was a development for the Navy that was ejected from a sonobuoy tube and unfolded for flight. We were 50% successful in launch attempts. The unit flew great, problem was computer acquisition and controlled flight before it bit the dust. Anyway, I got laid off somewhere in there, but kept in touch with friends working there. ACR got into financial trouble and got bought by B&E Aerospace. The only thing they really wanted was this unfolding electric plane. This video I’m posting has the identical design I remember working on. Pretty damn cool! looks like the concept is working good.

Here is another one I was involved with, The Silver Fox UAV. This one has a Fuji 25cc four stroke on it, so it was after my time at ACR. When I was there, I took 25cc four stroke Honda weed wacker engines and modified them for aircraft use. It was good times. One of the jobs I miss the most.

Thats badd ass hit Ben…. You and Justin are Lucky to have done some RC stuff for a living… I think it’s hard to make a living in RC.. especially now that we have the internet…. I have seen a lot of tracks and shops come and go…  When I was a young man.. I thought it would be awesome to have an RC shop..  now… I dunno.. 😉
