All the hobby shops in Tucson are gone. Ace Hardware near me and another Ace out by Rita Ranch are all we have left. Good place for trains, r/c cars/trucks. Airplane stuff is coming along, but it is mostly electric ready to fly foam crap. 🙂

Just acquired a Yak55 model from a friend for some money he owed me. The plane is 50cc size and has been in a slight crash.

I stripped the covering from the fuselage to do the repairs.

Had some pretty extensive structure repairs, so I stripped away most of the sheeting around the gear area. A previous owner prior to my friend pancaked a landing. That person started the repair, but gave up and sold to my friend. Anyway, spent all of today repairing/remounting the landing gear. Then re-sheeted the area around the gear. I really like bringing planes back from the dead. Kind of like rust repair on old Volks. 🙂

Scale is about 1/5 of full size. It has an 83″ wing span. I do still have the twin OS160 that I ran up there all those years ago. It’s currently on the self waiting its next project. This plane did have a 50cc 2cycle on it, but I will be using a 50cc four stroke. The OS is only 25cc, so to small for this project.

Did another five hours in the shop today. Got the engine mounted. Had to cut off the fire wall and move it back 1 15/16”. Looking 👀 good.  Engine fits inside the cowl perfectly. Can’t wait to fly this boy.

That plane looks awesome Ben.

I haven’t played with R/C stuff in 30 years. I was always an R/C car guy. I always wanted to learn to fly a plane but was scared to sink a bunch of money into one to abruptly crash it on its first flight. I tried a huge glider once, fun to build but I crashed it a couple times and gave it away.

If I wasn’t counting my pennies I would buy that kit Ben recommended.

Get one John so I can live vicariously through you.
