Thanks John. I really dug that one too.
I’ve done a little more work on the Samba. Pressed out the ball joints with this tool I made some years ago. Still works great:MikeKParticipantJanuary 17, 2020 at 12:12 pmPost count: 230
Installed a new swing lever kit. I’m waiting on some ball joints then I can get it back together.MikeKParticipantJanuary 17, 2020 at 12:15 pmPost count: 230
The decklid is pretty beat. It has a big sway to it and the sides are really stretched out. The center section is pretty good minus some holes and minor dents.MikeKParticipantJanuary 17, 2020 at 12:17 pmPost count: 230

Both hinge mounts were cracked. This one had been repaired and got worse.MikeKParticipantJanuary 17, 2020 at 12:19 pmPost count: 230
The frame needs some work to make it lay flat against the skin.MikeKParticipantJanuary 17, 2020 at 12:23 pmPost count: 230
Got the frame nice and straight, then sheared off the bad portions of the decklid after making some measurements.MikeKParticipantJanuary 17, 2020 at 12:26 pmPost count: 230
A good way to fill larger holes is to weld a pulling pin to a piece of sheetmetal, trim it close to a circle the spin it in a drill against a grinder to make it the perfect size. I’ll make a clean hole with a uni-bit, then TIG it in.MikeKParticipantJanuary 17, 2020 at 12:27 pmPost count: 230
Got all the holes welded up, then bumped and metal finished it.MikeKParticipantJanuary 17, 2020 at 12:28 pmPost count: 230
Cut the blanks for the sides and put some shape in them.MikeKParticipantJanuary 17, 2020 at 12:30 pmPost count: 230
Some may find this interesting. All Bay and earlier Buses have the same profile on the sides and the back. I made this sweep years ago and it fits every Bus I’ve worked on, minus Vanagons.
