Heck yeah! I just put a new head gasket in my ol Honda chop and I am really looking forward to some cruising adventures. The Run to Raton is going to be July 16th weekend – a good one to put on the calendar. Last year my wife drove chase van over Monarch, camped at friends ranch outside Salida and Hwy 69 through West Cliff. Once there we had a solid couple of days riding two up through the New Mexico mountains and hanging out at JP Rodman’s cool shop. Bands, great people, and some wicked customs. He raffled off a killer VW trike. https://www.runtoraton.com/

I call it Hunter Canyon road but I don’t know if that is correct but it is just east of 16 road when 16 road hits the bottom of the book cliffs. The Sarlacc trail is right off of it and some other cool new single track that they just put in last fall. The road is my favorite hill climb test road. Nice and sandy (or snow packed). I have been lucky to not have any traffic encounters but I have got some less than pleased looks… what is a speed junky to do?! Here is a picture of my last hill climb project bike up there.IMG_3953

Those 650R’s are beasts! I’ve had two. First one was stolen and never recovered, second, I sold ’cause I couldn’t hang on no more.

I love them! If I could only have one bike, that be it. I must have had nearly half a dozen of them but I still have my first one and it has had the living crap kicked out of it! And still is always ready for more. It used to be my daily driver when I lived in the mountains I screwed ice racing screws into the knobbies and freaked out everybody on my commutes to work. I had one stolen too. Such a over built tough bike. Don’t make em like that any more…

Honda_XR650R-1The XR650R was made from 2000-2007 and was developed by Johnny Campbell and HRC during Honda’s dominance in Baja racing. It is the only XR nomenclature bike that it water cooled. I started riding them when I was sponsored to race Baja SCORE in 2005 and 2006. I was team mechanic and head rider and we did pretty good but in 2007 Honda pit support stopped supporting the bike in favor of their new CRF450X (derived from the fragile motocross 450R) I built a CRF450X but it did not hold up during the 1000 and Baja racing was then over for me. I can’t help but feel the 650R was the last bike built to last, all the new bikes seem like our phones and computers; built with fragility and engineered obsolescence. But that is just my grumpy mechanic opinion 🙂

My favorite Johnny Campbell quote, ” too fast, to quick”.

Yesterday I took the “Edamame Commie” out, I think it’s first drive since 1974. A test drive/shakedown turned into a solid 2 hour shred fest. I was having so much fun that I could not turn around and before I knew it I was on top of the book cliffs. Amazing car. Sofa King Fun!!IMG_3939IMG_3940IMG_3947

Blew my engine apart yesterday for the two gears pictured. Lower first and higher fifth. Going to drop in a new high compression piston and stage 1 cam while it’s apart.
