Thanks for the tip! I’m going to see if I can get the OG VW part off, but now I have a plan B. I may just order a pair so that I can replace them on the old gates, before selling them.tlambertParticipantNovember 8, 2018 at 3:16 pmPost count: 295
Kips Friday night. Bulli Saturday and bugjam Sunday.
I’ll see you there! I’ll be in the red vert Friday night and my red bus the rest of the weekend!
Oh shit. What did you do? We are leaving tomorrow headed to Fl. Hope to see you there. Kips Friday night. Bulli Saturday and bugjam Sunday.
Had to pull tension on the latch while tightening down the philips screw without fucking up the paint on the screw head. I wouldn’t ever recomend trying to remove these. Headed down to bulli tomorrow. staying at the hotel right there at the show. Wesly Chapel saturday night.
We made it! I will see you guys tomorrow night or Saturday.

The cutting is about to begin…. 😎Pat KKeymasterNovember 10, 2018 at 6:17 amPost count: 1268

Pat is always a good alarm clock when you’re visiting the compound. His grinding at 6am really gets you up in the morning haha!John JonesKeymasterNovember 10, 2018 at 9:28 amPost count: 6326
Cut and slice…. Pat was at it early… Your truck is clean…. It’s never had a full on redo…. It’s kinda in between on the rust scale of things… For instance…. the cargo floors look pretty good… pretty much patchable… but it’s a close one to call… Cutting out cargo floors on a DC sucks… especially if we leave the bed on…. 8-( It looks thin thin thin under the gas tank area…. anyway… Pats gonna keep on cutting till we get to the good stuff…. 😎mdubgParticipantNovember 10, 2018 at 10:26 amPost count: 293
You guys are amazing! Watching from afar on the old interwebs, I get updates 6-7 days a week, of serious work! Great updates!
When I got the DC a few years ago, I popped open the “smugglers compartment” because the cab reeked of gas after a fill-up. Turns out the gas filler neck was leaking where it meets the tank. When I opened up the compartment, it was stuffed with housing insulation and painted with tar. I spent a couple weekends cleaning all that crap out. Not fun!
Here are the before pics:
I cleaned it up and rattle canned it for a short-term fix. Here is a cleaned up picture. Can’t wait for the KCW long-term fix picture.
Since this truck is a 1960, it doesn’t have the overflow tube coming off the filler catch, that drains below the floor. Any spilled or sloshed gas ends up in the cab under the rear seat. What do you think about installing one of those tubes. I know it’s not stock, but it might be a good add for the future health of the vehicle and the occupants (reducing vapors). Also, no one would see it, or know it’s there in that seal compartment.volksaddictParticipantNovember 10, 2018 at 10:30 amPost count: 573
Cutting out cargo floors on a DC sucks…
Big time! Welding and grinding too!
Hope I never do that again!!Pat KKeymasterNovember 10, 2018 at 12:38 pmPost count: 1268
Made some good progress today. Cutting out big sections. Will need to come back and disect the welded areas.
Driver side lost the inner and outer rockers all the way to the rear fender well, some inner pillar sections, front out rigger and jack point.
Pass side had some accident damage. Lower b-pillar and tear of dogleg. I give a little blood to each project.
Pile of led melted from pass lower b-pillar/dogleg.
Pass side lost the dogleg, About 1/3 of the lower b-pillar inner and outer and the cargo door rocker. Bit more to come not quite back to solid metal everywhere.
We will build it if it comes.JbParticipantNovember 10, 2018 at 1:29 pmPost count: 588
Killing it homies, bucket list dub for me….early DCs are rad!!!John JonesKeymasterNovember 11, 2018 at 8:18 amPost count: 6326
Mike,, Were gonna have to cut the cargo floor out it’s so pin holy in the rear…. the inner rockers on both sides are right there to.. outers also.. Looking like a full on rust build now… 8-( anyway.. Pats here again cutting… 😎mdubgParticipantNovember 11, 2018 at 8:03 pmPost count: 293
I figured as much. I’ve seen that floor up close and in the gas compartment, it was pretty pockmarked and there were a few pin holes that I was aware of. It’ll be nice to have a solid new floor.John JonesKeymasterNovember 12, 2018 at 7:10 amPost count: 6326
Looks like lower nose, front floor, 4 outriggers, 4 jack points, some top hat sections, 2 inner rockers, and rockers all he ay down both sides all pillars, and atleast 12″ up the pass B.. Pass dog leg, cargo floor, bulkhead, engine lid, gates….. Thats so far… 😎 Pats at it again early this morning!!! 😎
