Looks good. Amazing what can be done in short period of time when you really put effort into it .
Got a holiday card in the mail and racecar parts show up out of nowhere!? What a day!! π
My mom sent me a photo out of one of her scrapbooks from when I was a kid. We lived in Denver for a couple years. The pic was a photo of my younger brother Weston and I at a vw show in 2001.Β
My Dad seemed to remember that a pic of us painting on that vanagon was in a hot vwβs so he pulled all of them out from that year and found us in an issue from Jan 2002.
But look who else was also in that same article! Mr two tone Jones with his peach DD! Haha such a funny coincidence! I guess I was hanging with KCW a lot earlier than I thought π
Those Rocky Mountain Motorworks shows were so fun. The blowout sales they had, the off road rallyβs weβd do after the shows, Pikes Peak ascents and crazy camp outs with giant bonfires. Β Good times.
Funny Cole! I was there as well that year, I wonder if you and Callie were painting that VW side by side!!!ππππ
That is soo cool! Β And I agree with Mike.. those were the good times!!
Small worldβ¦. Β Iβve been hanging out with Cole since he was just a youngin π€πππ€ππ€π€π€π€Proud and Stubborn ππ»

Had a question that I can’t answer from an old hot rod guy who is primed to build his first VW . It will be for his daughter, so he wants as much power as possible but reliability is most important. So…. what is the biggest engine that can be built without machine work ? Any kits available that are worth consideration ? Recommendations on carburetor or fancy new computer controlled injection set ups ?
I would have the case opened up for larger pistons. Its cheap power. I think a 1776cc(90.5mm x 69mm), single port heads (because the intake doesn’t have boots to fail) with stock 30pict1 carb, 8:1 compression, engle 100 cam, and a single quiet pack exhaust will run really good for a long time and not need much attention.
If he wants to spend money on a crank CB Performance has a 69.5mm counterweighted that will drop in with stock VW rods and works well in the combo above.
Or he could go with a 76mm stroker crank and chevy journal rods to make the engine larger….but larger engine will need a bigger carburetor to take advantage of the size. So you’re back to dual weber’s/linkage or a single weber(which won’t fit very well with a decklid). I suppose a guy could put a 76mm crank into a stock case with 85.5mm pistons and run a stock carburetor…but I think it would be easier/cheaper to open the case & heads for 90.5mm….A small stroker build will need shims under the cylinders to get the deck height correct, which causes problems fitting tin/intake/exhaust.
Black Line Racing in Idaho has setup Holly sniper EFI on a VW engine, but I don’t know anything about it.
Thanks Franz. I was hoping you would check in. I suggested he talk to the guys at Painters, but he is an old school hot rod guy and I’m kind of thinking he might want to do his own build.
the old school 1776.. Thats the preferred motor of shasta snow trip..Β Β for all the reasons Franz mentioned.. π
