Looking forward to seeing how you guys do this time around, gonna be a good one. I agree with JJ, lets spend some more time down in Mexico this year!!
Always a good plan !
I spent some time playing with the race car this weekend. Installed the Odyssey pc925 battery, removed the skid plates, and started fitting the winch. It fits perfectly in front of the gas tank. Next project is to build new skid plates. The front needs a better approach angle, the rear need to be easier to install and remove, while being strong enough to pull on.
Thinking of using a 1 1/4″ reciever hitch on the winch so that it can be taken out and moved to the rear if needed.
I like the hitch receiver idea, that has saved me in the Vanagon a couple times being able to move the winch to either side.
That battery looks slick too! cool.
I know after the race the skid plates were hard to get off and even harder to get back on because they were all beat and torqued in weird ways… They did protect pretty well though!
Yeah they did a good job. We rallied that car!
How much does that winch weigh? Are you going to try and build a beefy reinforcement plate of some kind for it when it is mounted up front? Just thinking of all that leverage being at the nose of the car. Might bend some of the body from bouncing around haha
Made to be rallied! Such a cool car
Winch is 29lbs
battery is 26lbsYeah dude, thinking of attaching the receiver hitch to the panhead just above the beam. Also need to figure out some sort of apron/bumper mounts to beam reinforcement to keep the front end from getting bent down like last time.
What if we donโt make a perm mount for the winch?
Keep it in a bag behind the co-driver. If weโre stuck enough to have to winch out I donโt think saving a couple minutes is a big deal.
Fab up a pull point front and rear of car and a loop plate that mounts to the winch.
We can loop a length of yank strap through the pull points, maybe keep it looped through the front and tucked up in the trunk. Couple of easy access electrical connections nearby for the winch.
Keeps the weight of the winch and mount off the front. Adds low center weight to the bottom of the car which will also help our lean angle on side hills.
We will build it if it comes.
Yeah I agree, lets pack the winch behind the seat. The very front is pretty much the worst place for weight. I don’t want to add too much fab work weight either.
Really like the way you guys are thinking this through.ย This kind or forethought can really pay off once you hit the trail.
We try. Its a team effort. A lot of thought has gone into this car
Racing is hard to do, we feel lucky to have the opportunity….doing our best to get this car on the podium.
When is the next big race for you guys
Gotta ask KB. I haven’t talked with him about it recently, I don’t know what he is planning on.
Registration for the San Felipe 250 opened up a few days ago. Race weekend is April 4-7.
We will build it if it comes.
Dumb question here. What year steering column and what type of steering wheel are you running in this car? ย I pulled the one out of my โ73 and was hoping to just put in an early column to clean up the look of everything but the mounts are way different. Just curious
