Thinking about the pit truck a little this morning.
On race day we’re going to be hauling all the parts, tools, fuel, and food. I hoping we can ditch the trailer and just drive the truck.
I think it would be good to have some low profile bed drawers like these to keep parts and tools accessible/organized under the fuel jugs and pit supplies.FranzKeymasterApril 17, 2018 at 11:21 amPost count: 3917

Peet and Franz need to wrap their heads around this baja….. I’m close to saying lets stop on that syncro… we have a real dead line with this baja… not so much with the Vanagon..FranzKeymasterApril 20, 2018 at 9:49 amPost count: 3917
We have been thinking and planning for so long. Started figuring the in car parts, tools, and safety layout. Been reading all the rules to make sure we have no problems.
Working towards paint.
The body was rattled to death from previous racing. Doors were falling off. Lots of cracks. Pat had welded and did major repairs before blasting. I fabbed and installed pilar to cage gussets yesterday. Eight of them to prevent future problems.
Steering column has no rules. Open. We’ve simplified with aftermarket industrial bearing and welded/sleeved quick release steering wheel adapter to a stock 60-67 column.ColeBModeratorApril 20, 2018 at 10:12 amPost count: 1990

Race car on the lift today. I was going to fit the steering but it kind of evolved to removing the entire front suspension.
We have been collecting parts to fit, Braille battery, hds7carbon gen3 navigation, stella III, tach, idiot lights and grab handles. I ordered some chromoloy tubing to make the tie rods out of. The rules say stock with the options of heims ends and chromoloy. Converting to heims is expensive and negligible performance. We decided to stay with the stock 68+ ends.
I remember a few years ago Hot VWs and Wagens West? put out an article comparing tie rod ends by cutting them apart. Does anybody remember that? Where can I find that info again? Same with ball joints. I want to be sure I have the best steering parts I can get.
I would normally default to German stuff. But like I said I want to be sure.Critter1ParticipantApril 23, 2018 at 8:51 pmPost count: 227
The gusset/stops on the control arms sure look beefy and purposeful!

Yeah, hook and rod type suspension limiter.
I had a hard time removing the lower torsion arm because of the pre-load on the hook and rod. I was thinking if we have to change a lower ball joint(likely), that it would be easier with a limit strap type suspension limiter.FranzKeymasterApril 24, 2018 at 8:23 amPost count: 3917
Hey guys we need to get registered for the race. Registration opened last Friday.
I know it looks like we have a pile of work to do…. But I feel good about it. We’re just making the car better.
The way the order works on race day is the finishers of the San Felipe 250 start first, followed by the DNFs, then the new 500 registrations in the order they were received.
The sooner we get it in, the further up the pack/traffic jams we will be.
I don’t think there is a limit on the number of class 11 cars allowed to race because they are the last to go.ColeBModeratorApril 24, 2018 at 8:39 amPost count: 1990
I believe Sara is on it. She was in contact with the race manager. I will follow up with her and see what info she needs. Im excited to get out and work on this thing soon.ColeBModeratorApril 24, 2018 at 10:54 amPost count: 1990
Ya, right after Moab. Ill try and hitch a ride from someone going back to KCW from the campout. Then I’ll be there to work for about a weekColeBModeratorApril 24, 2018 at 12:05 pmPost count: 1990
Just talked to Sara, she needs to know everyone on the “team” that will be going to Baja. First and last names. She needs to know the drivers and co drivers. She also asked if we have the Stella III (emergency location device) in our car. She said we just need to get the brackets. The actual device is given to us and then returned after the race.FranzKeymasterApril 24, 2018 at 2:29 pmPost count: 3917
Yes Stella III accessory kit was ordered last week.
I’m not sure how you guys want to stack the race car time and give official titles. Weston? Reed? Friends? Family?
KB – driver
Cole – driver
Franz Muhr -codriver
Patrick Peet -codriver
John Jones -pit boss/back up?
Patrick Kendall -Fuel man/pit crew
Tony – Transport specialist/ pit crew/back up?
That would make for a 5 person team in the chase truck pit/crew at all times. We could probably squeeze one more person in the pit truck.
Or run a second chase rig.FranzKeymasterApril 24, 2018 at 2:31 pmPost count: 3917
We’ll be pitting about every 4 hours. We could switch teams each stop. Or try to double up for 8 hours.
