When my Pamper motor was originally built… It had ratio rockers .. 1.25’s and steel pushrods. Eddie built. I broke a rocker stud once.. and another time I noticed my valve covers were getting hit by my adjusters.. and LEAKING!!! (Ratio’s have the adjuster on the opposite side of stock rockers). Soooo… I put stock solid shaft 1.1 rockers on last time I went through it, but left the steel pushrods. The last time I changed my oil and checked my heads… I was eye balling my rockers while off, and noticed these shiney wear spots on the ends…. humm… Looked like I probably needed longer push rods for less rocker angle at zero lift while my valves are closed… So… I measured and ordered some slightly longer pushrods from Smith Brothers.. out of Oregon I think… They sell the best pushrods on the market.. IMO… My steel one’s were pretty much stock length, I ordered 11 3/16″ Overall length, and 3/8 aluminum tube… ball end….
Well… While doing the swap today… I had to add some shims under my rockers.. I got to thinking about it… and I think my rocker angle is more dictated by the swivel feet adjusters I have… and I don’t think I made the angle any better… But what I did notice, is that the ball is shaped differently and slightly longer.. allowing more clearance at that valve closed angle…..

The top one is stock, the middle is my steel manton’s, and the bottom, black one, is more like the smith bros… (although it is a empi steel kit) You can tell in the push rods up top how the smithbros looks..

With the swivel feet adjusters you definitely have to raise the rocker assembly. Sometimes more than others.
Here is my WBX with 1.25 ratio rockers and swivel feet:
I’ve found that it’s a matter of trial and error to get to the ideal pushrod length and correct rocker geometry. Put some shims under the rocker block, install an adjustable pushrod, put a dial indicator on the valve retainer to find the middle of the cam lift, then ensure that the rocker/swivel foot is perpendicular to the tip of the valve at 50% lift. This may take more or less shims and adjustments to the pushrod. Once it’s where you want it, measure the length of the pushrod and cut to size. Another critical thing to be aware of is the oiling hole for the swivel foot adjusters. Make sure the groove is lined up with the oiling hole on the rocker or it won’t lubricate properly. This may involve clearancing the bottom of the rocker. I like to set mine up so that over time, when the seats sink a bit and valves stretch, the oiling hole is still going to line up properly. In other words, I align the top of the groove on the adjuster to the oiling hole so that as I back out the adjuster over time, the oiling hole is still properly align.
All this fiddly work; aligning oiling holes in bearings, cam end play, distributor drive shaft end play, surfacing oil pumps and covers, lapping cylinders into heads, deburring cams, in addition to all the other measurements you need to be concerned about, is the reason that it’s difficult to build motors for a reasonable price. Very few folks want to pony up the bucks for a blueprinted motor. If you’re a machine shop who does nothing but engines all day and a large volume, you can be sloppy and take back the few that have problems and deal with it, think GEX, but it’s work that most people can do on their own and the results are better longevity and less engine pulls. It takes me longer than most to assemble a motor, but I generally don’t have to mess with it once it’s completed.
Do you have pics of the windshield down bar modifications you did? I can’t believe someone would bend those up like they had them.
I looked at where it had been modified and cut out the extra piece’s.. It had been raised up like 4inch’s or something.. I couldn’t stand the big ass seats…. so I went completely opposite with a tiny bench…. 😎
Got the engine mocked up.. here is what I have… There are a few things I do not like.. like the header being right behind the fan… sucking in the hottest air it can…. 8-( and I don’t like the waste gate way the fuck up there either… I reckon I should attempt to put this in the rail now before I make any changes…. 😎
