The sand rail looks like a good timeRustabusParticipantAugust 22, 2019 at 7:21 pmPost count: 1514
Do you want that aluminum beam? Looks like your rail might have one already?John JonesKeymasterAugust 23, 2019 at 6:26 amPost count: 5288
if your looking for a new home for it… bring it down… I’ll give you a few bucks for it… 😎 I might build more than one sand rail… 😎John JonesKeymasterAugust 26, 2019 at 7:07 amPost count: 5288
welll…. I finally completed all the HVX mods on my engine… It was large job… and I drug my feet a bit.. Last night I fired it up..!!! So many little mods to the oiling system on this… I was nervous about oil pressure… But I built it like 5 or 6 times before I ever even put fuel to it.. And cold.. it would hold the pressure for like 20 seconds after I stopped cranking it.. and got pressure immediately when I hit the key… So… I put fuel and voltage to it and fired it up… Sounds as it always does… GREAT… I spent more time on my rockers yesterday also, I can tell my valve train sounds more quite.. I had a few rockers with a bunch of side to side movement.. Now that I better understand how the heads get oiled… I better understand the importance of well set up rockers… 😎 Which, is why Bob Hoover even started looking into these mods… He was breaking and gauling up rocker shafts… and yeah.. valve train has always been a sensitive spot on out hot rod engines… 😎
The mods… You really gotta read the Bob Hoover blog to understand it all…. But in brief.. I drilled a new/ additional oil galley on the 1/2 side to connect the 2nd main bearing to the cam and lifters which feed the heads. So doubling it’s supply… Then did the Gene Berg mod to the lifters.. gettting oil to the rockers 8 times more than stock… 😎 and ground a groove in my rockers connecting the two drill holes making it easier to get oil to the swivel adjuster that sprays oil on the valve stems and cools the heads!!!! and I added the Quart Nine sump…. I almost doubled my oil capacity, I doubled the oil flow to the heads and unrestricted it’s access to the heads… and the sump should cool the oil more than a standard style sump.. I also have the type 4 cooler and venturi ring… and I have a big 30mm shadek pump to make sure we have plenty of pressure!!!!! There really isn’t much more I could do for this engine… The compression is around 7:1…. hemi cut heads… I also added the metal baffles on the heads in the center to help direct more air AROUND the head and not jus shoot it down out of the heads…
She’s going in tonight… 😎 after I get some paying work done!!!!! 😎 I think I will pick somewhere to road trip to this weekend… 😎CorporateKeymasterAugust 26, 2019 at 7:46 amPost count: 616

Quart nine bitches! The Mac daddy version too!!PeteParticipantAugust 26, 2019 at 12:07 pmPost count: 741
Looking forward to seeing how the new engine performs with those mods. Maybe it’ll become standard operating procedure going forward.
Are you trying a vacuum advance distributor too?John JonesKeymasterAugust 27, 2019 at 6:56 amPost count: 5288

I gotta admit.. I kinda want to find a good vacum dist to run… but giving $500 for one sounds nuts… I think thats the only other item I could try or do…. 😎 This motor is maxed out on mod’s… 😎 😎
Is this going to be “standard procedure”.. I doubt it… Painters didn’t seem real excited the first time I mentioned it.. but maybe with some positive results and some coaxing I could talk them into it… Maybe it’s just something we can offer.. .. 😎 I think the sump is also going to be a big contributor to the equation also!! More oil, and cooler oil…. and NOT running an external cooler… 😎 😎 8x’s the oil to the heads… I don’t know how it couldn’t help!!!! 😎 But at the current production rate on them sumps… they are going to cost like $1500 bucks…. 😎 I doubt we will sell any of those… 😎PeteParticipantAugust 27, 2019 at 7:18 amPost count: 741
This stuff is interesting to me. With a larger oil pump to keep the pressure up it’s hard to see how these mods can’t help, especially on these big bore stroker engines. Next Triple J’s project….Bob Hoover oiling mods on JB’s next case for his oval?
The vacuum advance may not be necessary, but the part about running 10-15 degrees retarded w/ a centrifugal-only advance dizzy at 1/3-1/2 throttle caught my attention. But maybe you’re at the rpm’s where it’s at max advance anyway? I don’t know….. but I imagine you long road trippers spend lots of time in that 1/3-1/2 throttle range. If nothing else if I were you JJ I’d definitely put a wideband on it to make sure your engine is staying out of that 14-15 AFR range at cruising speed.JbParticipantAugust 27, 2019 at 9:10 amPost count: 483
Ya I’m game, been a while since I read any of that shit….maybe I’ll have to revisit, love learning.
I’d really like to get into a distributor that has some tunability….for the kombi and oval! the reliability of a cast mech dizzy is hard to beat but if carried a timed spare in the hazet 🤔 only problem is throw that in on side of road and carb jetting is out now
Pete these big motors are on idle jet on the highway. I put some miles on the kombi this weekend and was pointing out (to my hot ass fuckin date in pass seat🤤) how little throttle I was using at 130km…..probably 1/8” hahaWaynerParticipantAugust 27, 2019 at 9:11 amPost count: 94PeteParticipantAugust 27, 2019 at 9:34 amPost count: 741

You think so? I’m still trying to learn this stuff. I thought that larger displacement engines create more vacuum, which bring in the main jets much sooner than smaller engines, so big engines are off the idle at very low load/rpm. Is that not accurate?WaynerParticipantAugust 27, 2019 at 9:42 amPost count: 94
Also if you do go the vacuum advance route this valve helps make a stronger signal for dual carbs. And you want ported vacuum (above throttle plate) not manifold vacuum to work correct.
