Hey John….time to go on face book and sign up with air cooled Vw parts for sale. There have been several sand rails on there lately at VERY reasonable prices. Only thing is, the best ones (and really cheap for what they are) have been in Texas. I’m gonna talk to Eddie and or Ross about the Bob Hoover mods… and pull my engine out and send it over for a freshen up and hopefully some head cooling mods also…. 😎 I think I have 2 1/2 years on the bottom end…. and it’s had 3 different top ends on it… Looks like my main seal is seaping oil also… Rusty and I are going to Mt Rushmore in a couple months.. In regards to the Bob Hoover engine cooling mods-
I was reading up on the difference in advance curves on the 019 vs. an 010, when I came across this nugget on the Samba (posted by John Connelly of Aircooled.net FWIW):
The 010 and 019s are older versions of the 009. Apparantly bosch thought more of quality back in the day, then they do now. The German 009s are also not bad at all.
The problem with running these centrifugal only distributors is that they have no load sending, aka vacuum advance. Without vacuum advance, your engine is running 10-15 degrees TOO RETARDED at part throttle operation, which is why 009/010/019 and all other centrifugal distributors will cause an engine to get lower MPG and run hotter, then the same engine with a properly running vacuum advance. I guarantee you a 15-20F drop in oil temps, and 3-4 mpg improvement, when adding vacuum advance to an engine that used to have a 009/010/019, do put my $ where my mouth is.
Remember, this is only present at off-idle to 1/3-1/2 throttle, vac advance TURNS OFF over 1/2 throttle, leaving you with just the centrifugal advance. This vacuum advance also reduces hesitation when shifting gears, or pulling away from a stop. This is why a carb with a cent only distributor has to be richened up to get rid of the flat spot, by making the idle jet, main jet, or pump squirt, RICHER. The problem is the ignition timing, not the fuel delivery!
I don’t know what distributors you guys are running, so maybe this is all a moot point, but I thought I would add it to the cooling conversation.
