I was in your shop about a year ago asking about SA tranny’s with redux boxes, thinking that I needed to build a baja.  Since then I’ve spent a lot of time on the Samba forum and have gone the IRS route instead, and have purchased a 73 Class 11 look-alike.  While in your shop I looked at a baja and was told it had been over Imogene Pass.  Whose bug is that, and would he be wiling to talk to me about gearing and other mods necessary to run trails like that? (tire size, turning brakes, etc.)  My bug has a Type 1 tranny with 4.37 R/P and a torquey 2 ltr engine.  I was thinking of regearing 1st through 4th.

    Thanks

That would be me. My sand scorcher baja That got rolled this summer…  I took it up there… Stock motor, stock gearing big tires, it was slow and gutless, and I had to slip the hell out of the clutch to get up a few hills…. It was hard….

I would get the LOWEST gearing you can…   and a motor with lots of torque, a 2 liter.. Would be awesome too!!!   I got my ass handed to me by side by sides a few times this year….  I just couldn’t go slow enough.. and when I got slowed down by an obstacle… I would be dead in the water…  😎  My wife even pushed us a few times….. 😎

Thanks John.  I didn’t make it far up Imogene with my Thing. It did go over Ophir, Cinnamon, and Mosquito and I recall people pushing on a couple of those. The Think was stock except for tires which were probably about 29″

My rig is at a shop right now so I don’t know if it has the 73 SSC tranny it came with originally.  The 4.37s were added later.  If it is a SSC I am thinking about regearing 1st through 4th to 4.13, 2.46, 1.5, 1.09 which would give it a crawl ratio of 18.5:1 vs the stock 14.7:1.  That would give it the equivalent of a 4.78 R/P.  I’ve been told that just changing the R/P to 4.86 would be too weak, but then again I don’t know if the 1st through 4th gear changes are weak.

What is your ideal use for this rig?? Road/dirt or off-road only??

Road/Dirt.  The engine was built for a bus with low gears with a cw crank and other stuff way beyond my understanding that would allow it to cruise at 3800 RPM.  So I think with a 4.37/R/P and a 1.09 with I should be able to go 65 with 29″ tires, which is the speed limit on the highway I will be driving.  But I’d ultimately like it to be capable in the desert and mountains too. No racing.

Here’s the build thread on my rig.  I’m the third owner after Sxurxf built it in 2011.

That car was great in its original configuration and it sounds like you may be bringing it back to it’s former glory.  I have

been studying this exact car for ideas for my ’73 Standard I recently acquired.  Keep updating us on it.

I hope to get it back the way it was.  I am having the 3″ lift spindles reinstalled, and will be installing Atomwerks raised spring plates instead of notching.  I’m planning to run 215/75R15 28″ tires instead of the 29s that Sxuxrxf had on them. I need to find some 5.5 x 15 4 lug steel VW wheels to replace the porsche mags on there now.

    Here’s a link to a similar build.

If I didn’t have a billion other projects, I’d like to build a class 11 bug with a Subi engine. I to, checked out the Samba link. Great looking bug.

I think we should do a baja trip to Telluride this summer…..

Agreed.  But how about if we base at my property in Silverton.  We have a camp trailer we pull up for the summer, and there is plenty of tent space.  Plus we have a shower house.  We are 8 miles up towards Animas Forks at 10,000 feet.
