Iβm with Franz. U need to convince VW to make a chassis/kit that a aircooled beetle would bolt up to. Would be easy to make a Ghia adaptor kit
We will build it if it comes.
Would be an Awesome conversion option!!!!!! π
Here is what you need to pitch to VW:
They need to make a new car that uses a chassis that is a bolt-on for a VW beetle. You can help them by proto-type designing the chassis to fit your beetle. They take your chassis, then make a car body to fit it, and sell a new car designed to be taken apart for the aftermarket vintage crowd…maybe even have a “crate-chassis” that we could buy for conversions? We need to find a way to make our vintage cars relevant in the automated electric future.
It would promote recycling a product that they have already produced millions of. All the taxi cabs in South America would need a electric pan conversion.
The tricky part will be suspension and steering. Their modern design fit to a beetle with minimal mods.
Yeah, what Franz said!!!! Get to work Kid!!!!!!!! π π π π π
That’s exactly what we have been developing. We still would need the independent rear suspension to locate that rear axle. Would you recommend using a later vw chassis or something more expensive like a mendola suspension or similar. I’m looking at buying a 69 pan for my bug that we can turn into a rolling chassis.
I would think VW would want to use new type suspension. Maybe you can get them to sponsor you an entire chassis like in the picture?? Then hack it all up.
Haha I wish! but I doubt they’d go for that… especially since it’s technology that they haven’t even released yet. The motor that they’ve been talking about is from the E-Golf and the subsystems for that doesn’t look as adaptable to a classic body.Β
I’m thinking about using this Double A arm rear suspension from Imohr that would allow us to have more freedom with the transmission placement and looks similar to what VW is using for their new chassis
Yeah the VW guys said that that vehicle that will be launched in the US in 2020 and there won’t be a way toΒ get those parts prior to 2020. Maybe after they start hitting the road and people start crashing them we could do a ‘body upgrade’ on one
Yeah long-shot dumb idea.
So are thinking of making the pan a battery like most electric cars?
Regular IRS control arms usually have the most space. That fancy A arm thing looks cool, but I think its more problems, plus a lot of money.
I feel like Glenn wants something sellable…Β Not just to do a conversion.. once..
Been a wild ride, but it got me here π

Over engineering is not always the right thing. Quite often simple is better. Been down that road a few times.
This was my inspiration earlier in the year. Cole’s post on those campers reminded me of this.
If you want your daily history lesson it’s pretty cool
Word around here is that this particular early SC has dodged the EV bullet and will be put back to stock!
Glenn has spring break soon and has been playing with the idea of getting some work done on it. Not sure if heβs made any real plans though.
The Moss internship program has expired…Glen can do whatever he wants for $70/hr Hahaha :smile
If he wants to sell that rig, I’ll send out a check for $3500 today ?
