Currently working with a team of electrical and mechanical engineers on designing a battery system for converting this truck to electric. We are running the numbers on a system of lithium ion batteries and super capacitors to increase acceleration and regen efficiency. I want to build a badass work truck with a triple RGB and store the batteries on a sliding tray down in the treasure chest for easy access. Something like this.

I’ll be mean, Sorry!  This isn’t a good idea. Classic cars are cool because of their classic design and technology. If you’re trying to impress people with an electric car you should find something worthless and make it awesome!!!! That Single is awesome already!!! Isn’t there a super cheap, massively produced vehicle that nobody likes that you could turn into an efficient, multi use electric car????

I’d rather swap to brand new electric stuff  than 1998 subaru. 🙂 Electric VW swaps have gotten a bad rap because of the old kits that were under powered. The set-up like Glen is talking about will kick-ass. I’m excited to see what he does.

…But the truck you have needs a big restoration and a bunch of parts before you can do any of that cool guy stuff. I’ll trade you a easier project if you’re looking for a way out. Baja bug?

I was just talking this over with someone the other day, scabs are the perfect platform for electric! Treasure chest for batteries keeps the weight down low and out of the weather, light easy to work on platform, not set up for any HVAC so a blow by electric heater could be plumbed into the cab. I envision a framework in the bed supporting a solar array or something the shape of a tilt covered in solar panels. Lots of ideas for my future electric scab!

Franz has it right! It’s coming whether we like it or not. A modern electric swap, like Tesla, would kick ass! The forklift motor and a pile of batteries is dumb, worse than subaru.

He’s also right that the resto of the 50 year old carcass comes first…

I think we could make this thing more functional than stock! The choice of electric isn’t necessarily because of the technology but because of the huge low end torque and dead reliability. I’ve been gathering and sorting through ideas.

I like the idea of a solar array Ryan! Although it probably wouldn’t be able to provide sufficient power to practically charge it much it would look really cool.

I was talking with EVWest again today and we discussed designing a mounting system for them that would be able to adapt a Tesla 250 v motor to an IRS transmission.

This type of motor would be able to be serviced by any Tesla technician rather than any custom shit.

What are your guys thoughts on IRS trannys?

Out here is certainly the mecca but you guys at high altitude would benefit from it even more.

This single cab has so much potential that I really cant think of a better build. The resto is most certainly not a trivial task as I’ve experienced through my brother’s builds. Part of me wants to bring it out here and be working on it after class but the way this semester is looking I know it would just take me way too long 🙃

This is a cool truck… and the best platform I can think of for the conversion….  Glen has a great idea and a crappy truck.  I have a shop and the skills to make it decent…  So How do we pull all this together????  😎  I’m more like rusty about electric cars… But I do find it interesting, and if it is the future no matter what…. I wouldn’t mind sticking my toe in the fresh concrete… 😎

The more I think about it….. I feel like the toy industry has been forging this path for years……  Were making our cars drive and mechanically like remote control cars…..    charge it up, turn it on, use your remote to control it….

Looks like my last post was lost 🙃 but I think that the choice in using an electric motor is not so much about the technology but more because of the instant low end torque and dead reliablity. I went to EVWest last week and will go back this week to discuss options. Our current plans are to use a 240 v Tesla motor and design a motor mount to adapt future conversions to an IRS transmissions. What are your thoughts on IRS transmissions?

Another idea we had was that we could use the batteries from the truck to reduce  power usage from the grid for companies to avoid power surge charges

Probably better for acceleration. RGB have a lifting effect because of the counter rotating shaft. With the tripple reduction gear box, the axle is turning the correct direction again and should allow the suspension to work properly.

If your lowering, a strait axle would be better

IRS is cool too, just a lot of cutting/welding to make work properly in a split bus.
