Thanks JJ! School sucks. Glad to be out of there and onto real life! Thanks for letting me hang out at the shop so much especially during my final project. It made school suck a lot less!;) hahaJohn JonesModeratorDecember 24, 2019 at 9:02 amPost count: 7855
yeah.. Most things that build you into a better man.. Suck… 😎ColeBModeratorDecember 26, 2019 at 10:36 amPost count: 2197
No BBB for me. But Shasta? I’m pushing to get my motor figured out in the next couple weeks so I can make the 20th anniversary SST trip! Gotta build a quick bed too… 🧐ColeBModeratorJanuary 9, 2020 at 8:58 pmPost count: 2197
Welp….. fun start to SST prep. Went through my carbs and put them back on expecting a fix for the weird bog my motor has been doing. But no luck. Checked fuel pressure. That was good. Valves good. Went through my distributor. All good. So I ran a compression check and I was at about 90 all around. Not good. So I did a leak down and had about 40% on all cylinders except #1…. sounds like it’s leaking into the case. So likely need to re ring it. Going to tear it apart tomorrow to confirm. Will likely hone/re ring/ lap the valves unless shit looks worse in the bottom end. Maybe got some sand in my motor from the Utah 300 trip? Who knows. Hopefully it won’t be too bad since I only have about 4000 miles on this motor. Will know more tomorrow. Hopefully have it put back together by the end of the weekend and then I can focus on my interior a bit. Gonna insulate the back of my bus and then build a bed. JJ/Gretchen, Do you have any photos of how you built the bed in the pamper? I think I’m just going to build a full time bed like that for now.JbParticipantJanuary 9, 2020 at 10:24 pmPost count: 657
Sounds like you didn’t drive it like you stole it in order to seat rings proper😝 I can show you how it’s done when u get back together😂
kidding aside, I’ve had glazing problems in past builds….on the kombi motor I used a graphite powder from total seal. It was recommended by several builders that I hold in high regards…..seems to bite in goodmtnbusParticipantJanuary 10, 2020 at 7:38 amPost count: 1392
Good luck bud. Where are you doing the work ?ColeBModeratorJanuary 10, 2020 at 9:57 amPost count: 2197

haha! We did the normal KCW break in protocol. Which included pouring beer on the engine while it breaks in. Does that not do the trick? Haha And then proceeded to take it on a 2000 mile trip to west Utah and back. But I bet the dust on the first break in run wasn’t the best…. hahaha
doing work this morning. At Jack Morris’ shop here in Washington, Bubba. Got it torn down. Going to start taking the top end off. Inspect everything. Hopefully know what’s really up here soon.MikeKParticipantJanuary 10, 2020 at 10:12 amPost count: 255
Not sure about your motor specs, but some builders I trust have been telling me to stay away from the rings which come in the AA kits for seating reasons.PeteParticipantJanuary 10, 2020 at 10:38 amPost count: 992
You might be too far into tear down now to check, but were heads still holding the spec’d torque?WillyModeratorJanuary 10, 2020 at 11:59 amPost count: 1395
Bummer dood! At least you’re in a good spot to tear it down

Ya, don’t know what rings painters used. The head nuts were all to spec. Definitely had some issues with the valves. None of them looked very seated. The cylinder walls were pretty smooth as well… so I ordered new rings and valves. Going to lap the valves into the heads and hone/re ring the cylinders.
also, stamped on the case it says that they put a Engle 110 cam in it. But when I looked in at the bottom end to look at wear I noticed that the cam says k8…. which is not a 110. More of a dragster cam…. I called painters and they said there is no way they put a k8 in if it is stamped 110…. so I’m confused. No one has been in the motor since they built it this summer.
i also had to order a new starter. Mine went out when I was doing compression checks hahaha. When it rains it pours I guess…
going to work on my interior this weekend while I wait for parts.
