Carburetor question

I finally got my 63 running. However it’s got some issues. I bought a rebuild kit for the stock carb which is a solex 28 pict 1. It’s running rough and has a hard time starting. It’s quite possible I did something wrong on the rebuild. I’ve tried adjusting it but to be honest I’m not certain how to really go about it correctly. So what should I do? Pull the carb and try again or look to getting a different one? The engine is the stock 1200 40 horse.  It’s there an alternate carb I can use?  When I accelerate it really bogs down and doesn’t accelerate very well, nor does it really have any power (even for a 1200 ?). Maybe I need to mail it to you guys for a correct rebuild. ?

Sorry for not responding sooner. Are you sure the problem is the carb? The biggest problem I see with old carbs is worn-out throttle shaft/bore. After years of use the bore becomes oval shape, and allow the engine to suck air through the gap. It doesn’t take much to cause a problem. I assume your car is still 6 volt? Which means that you have to repair an original carb rather than buying a new replacement. There is a guy on samba who offers a bushing repair/replacement service.

After you run the engine for a minute, turn it off.  Then look down the carb to see if it is dripping gas? That would indicate a float, valve, or fuel pressure issue.

I had him rebuild and rebush the 28 pict I had on my 48. It was leaking fuel out of the throttle shaft on the first engine start. He did an awesome job, 3 year warranty and a quick turn around. I will post before and after pics tomorrow if I remember. I had him replate all my hardware in black and the carb looks great.

Thanks for the help you guys. I messed with it again today, but no such luck. The throttle shaft doesn’t seem loose but I could be mistaken. I may just send it to that guy you suggested and get it rebuilt.

Your issue may be something else. Its hard to say over the internet.

If your carb isn’t dumping raw fuel down the venturi, then I would probably look at other stuff.

That carb looks amazing!  I went ahead and sent it to Tim @ Volksbiz today. Either way I think it needed a good once-over. The ceramic choke has a decent crack with a piece missing from the side. I don’t think I cleaned all the channels or lines in the carb as well as I needed to. This thing sat from 1984 until 2014 when I bought it. The carb had a lot of dried up crap in it.

I am sure you are right Franz and it could very well be other issues as well. I don’t know if the vacuum advance distributor is working correctly either. I checked the points (gap was right and they didn’t seem too worn or pitted). I just thought maybe getting the carb done correctly would at least eliminate that as the problem. Then after getting it back I will see where I am. I wish I was closer to KCW I would love to be a Parkway Project. Then I know it would be dialed in and running right. 🙂 For now I will just have to do my best to play mechanic and look for help from more knowledgeable people such as the fine folks on these forums.  I am going to get this thing at least running so I can start driving it. I will post pictures once I get the carb back from Volksbiz.

KCW isn’t too far to bring your car.. You shipped a carb.. You can ship cars too…  Or even better.. tow bar it or something over here….  I haven’t had anyone say it was not worth the drive to get their VW worked on at KCW… 😉  😉  😉

That is encouraging to here you say Mr. Jones. All this talk of you not wanting anymore work has been putting a damper on my dreams of someday being KCW family.

To volksman. He ain’t lying and you know what he says is true or you wouldn’t be on this forum. Just in case though, Browse a couple of the build threads or parkway projects and you will see his point proven repeatedly!! 😀

It was worth everything I had to do to get my car there…I’d do it again in a heartbeat!

Trust me John I plan to get this car to you. I’ve followed your site for around 10 years or so I believe. I’ve shown a lot of people the current and completed build galleries over the years. After finally meeting you and Gretchen at the salt lake show I was even more anxious to get this car in your shop. You guys were so down to earth and fun to talk to ! My son loved hanging with the shop dogs And told me after that it was his favorite part of being there. I too am anxious to become part of the kcw family. ?

Once I get my carb back I’ll get a trip to kcw planned.
