Lori and I are so happy to have John, Patrick and the whole gang at KCW resto our treasured Westy’s body!
As John posted, we’ve owned her since 1973!
She’s been very well loved (and very well travelled) and now she’s getting a full restoration, inside and out. John’s right – we have tons of VW-on-the-road stories! In 1975 we drove her from SoCal to Alaska for our honeymoon. (More to follow on that one.)
She’s never been in a wreck and has been well cared for over the past 46 years(!) and I was pretty sure she was very solid – but you never really know until you strip the paint. It was GREAT to see how solid she really was when John stripped it.
Stay tuned, pics to follow – as soon as I get them scanned (no digital cameras in the 70s!)
looks like a great bus !
Cool stories go hand in hand with old vw buses
congrats on the resto
welded up holes, cut out a few bad spots, ground everything… prepped cargo door rocker area.. good day! LOTS of pictures…. 😎

Glad this project slipped in!!!! Super Excited about the travels and that it’s getting a Nice Refresh!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 What are the interior plans???
Interior is entirely restored SO-42 Westy. Cabinets, ice box, tables etc. all refinished, new trim. I have new Baltic birch plywood (1/8″) already finished and cut to dimension to replace all the interior paneling on the roof, cargo doors, etc. New curtains – not OG material, but very similar pattern and much higher quality material and professional crafted. Windows are all restored – including Jalousie side windows and German factory ORIGINAL Safari windows with correct 5mm safety glass with correct VW logo. Upholstery was all done by Mike at Sewfine – not original yellow vinyl (wasn’t available at the time), but sort of saddle tan naugahyde with tan fabric on front seats, camper seat and bed. He also did the front door panels. Looks great. Koch’s restored the steering wheel. The rims have been straightened, powdercoated Silver White (L82) – new hub cap clips and new tires from Coker. Bumpers (correct “points”) are also restored and powder coated Silver White. I have already restored the steering box as well as have a fresh stocker 1600 and fresh transaxle ready to install. The only thing I still have to do while John et al. are taking care of the body is to restore the front suspension and brakes.
The short version is – this restoration has been “in progress” for years. Now it’s just the body and paint then the BIG fun – reassembly. Lori and I are REAL excited! Can’t wait to take her to a KCW campout!
