Hello, my name is Brian and I am a long time lurker around here. I live in Rapid City, SD and I make obsolete gun parts for my families business. I figured I should finally introduce myself and put up a few pics of my silly little single cab.
The truck was found about 20min from here where it had been sitting since the late ’80’s. I got it home, added my complete new front hybrid suspension, my bolt-in IRS kit, and a little 1835cc. I left most the previous owners metal work, and buffed the paint. I did restore the interior so it would be pleasant to drive.
It was shortened 32″, and it goes down the road WAY better than I thought it would. It is actually pretty fun to drive.
I would like to let anyone on here know if they are up here in the Black Hills and have VW trouble let me know. I have a full machine shop and I keep lots of parts on hand.
We are planning another bus road trip with the family this summer, and I think we are going to head through GJ down to southern Utah, so I might be hitting you guys up for some trip suggestions.

The front suspension was designed for people who drive their buses a lot. I ditched the pack-able wheel bearings for modern sealed hub assemblies. The spindle’s are 3.5” drop with corrected Ackerman for the narrowed beam. The hubs, calipers, and big 10.5” vented rotors are off-the-shelf modern American truck stuff. The parts are available at most every parts store across the country. I also built the beam and spindles to use bay window ball joint rather than link pins. This was for no maintenance, better ride, and easy alignment. The spindle are near flush on the outside, with no hub snout sticking out.
