When RC racing started…. Most of the model kits were a representation of a full scale racer… For instance… In this months Hot VW’s magazine is a vintage off roader with tons of racing history with some of the greats like Ivan Stewart.

When the RC-10 came out… It also was realistic… at first.. for instance..
But it didn’t take long for the “Purpose built” cars started coming out which were nothing like a “real” racer.. From there sky was the limit.. faster, lighter, etc… Batteries have taken off, I see the new remotes have blue tooth and internet connection etc.. Back then you had to build all the kits too… Nothing was ready to run except TOYS…. You had to build it all, you had to trim out your body and paint it and build your own batteries, and glue your own tires on, and set your own radio and speed control up.. You learned a few things building a kit… You learned about suspension, how shocks worked and current and amperage draw and voltage and all that shit. You had to be able to solder…. just pointing out all the positives that came form building RC’s as a youth.. You learned about dampening, and spring rates…. We were turning our own motors and running all kinds of different brushes and shit… Now.. it’s BRUSHLESS!!! Whats the fun in that….
So I have been building my sand scorcher model kit.. and dorking out looking at all the upgrades and what not for these chassis.. Tamiya made about 4 different kits that all utilized similar chassis… It was called the “Special Racing Buggy”. They had the sandscorcher, rough rider, buggy champ, super champ, fighting buggy and a ford truck I think… But these kits slowly got pushed to the side for the purpose built cars. That was fine and dandy for many many years and many upgrades I think they have an rc10 B6 now..
I think the Rock Crawlers helped bring scale realism back into RC… and a few years back.. Noticed Short Course racers coming out… Finally we were moving back towards some realism and scale appearance…. And now.. I think it’s time to do some
Scale Buggy Racing…
Realistic 1/10 scale tracks… No clown jumps, no jumping 300 feet… How fun would it be to set up a small track at BBB and have a race each year? I’m gonna get me a few these built so I can do some racing with corporate or anyone else I can talk into it… There fun, vintage and cheap….

Oh dang, I forgot about my short lived on-road career lol… I had a nitro Tc3 for a while…That was fun as hell but there wasn’t a big race scene close to me. Here is the only picture have of it…
I was looking at Tamiya cars last night. Should we all get Sand Scorchers to keep the racing even?
I was thinking to stick with the Special Racing Buggy chassis… Which is Tamiya.. and also has a suspension VERY much like our Volkswagens…. 😉 😉 https://tamiyabase.com/chassis/8-srb I think we run anything with the cast suspension….

Chassis description
The SRB chassis is possibly the most iconic chassis by Tamiya. It’s built on a FRP plate with front and rear suspension bolted on. Both ends have torsion bar suspension and have oil-filled dampers (Tamiya’s first). The radio box and rear mounted gear box is supposed to be water proof, it’s more like splash-proof. The radio box is made from clear plastic. The SRB chassis had many variations from the early production (Mk.1) with slimmer front trailing arms,screws instead of pegs as spring retainer, different gearbox moulding, etc, etc. There is no definitive point in time where the desing shifted from Mk.1 to Mk.2. The various changes were introduced during production. Now the re-released Buggy Champ and Sand Scorcher has even more changes, nearly all the parts has been modified compared to the old Mk.1 and 2. The above picture shows a Mk.2 Rough Rider chassis.
