#1 Aircooled badass

Postby Franz » Wed Oct 26, 2016 7:14 am

The fan shroud.

No subaru, vanagon, rotory, or anything else has one. Its the largest part of the engine, most visable, and makes it uniquely vw. It changes the appearance of a engine bay from a mess of plumbing and wires into something nice to look at.

I know how you subaru guys can talk all day about EJ22 swaps...but you have to agree with me on this. The look of a upright aircooled with dual carbs is a thing of beauty and simplicity.

If you disagree, find something that looks better and I'll try to listen. Smile

As the ring leader of the Subi circus, air cooled do look 10x better. Subis are ugly!

Maybe Subaru parts could fix it?

Franz doesn't strike me as the type of guy to toot his own horn, so I will for him. This one is a work of art:

I agree Franz. Upright air cooled look great. Ones done up with hidden wiring are especially appealing. To me Subi's are great from a maintenance aspect. Working under the engine is easy as pie with no heater boxes or engine tin in the way.

I'll have another air cooled some day. Slammed out convertible Ghia with a 1600 SP. \:D/

I like the look of a flathead V8 with three Stromburgh(spelling?) carbs.
Let me draw you a fucking picture!

Like I said in another thread Franz is the tin man. I knew he had a passion for them to work the tins the way he does. Dude you truly make an upright air cooled look Bad as Fuck with your patience for making the tins perfectly aesthetically appealing!

I agree that the aircooled vw engine is a beautiful thing. =D>

Nothing looks cooler than a hotrod flathead V8 in a 32 high boy . But along came the small block chevy. More HP , cheaper , more reliable. . But will never be cooler .
Same thing with the subi

You know the other night I was thinking how butt fuck ugly the subies look in a VW.....ideas started filling my head on how to bolt a 36er shroud and VW alt on with a rad hiding inside it :-& :-k

So true. The ACVW and the flathead Ford are the two best looking hot rodded engines ever, IMO.
A 1915 I built for my friends 67. I was also going for a little Porsche taste.

I was just thinking the same thing Except I hadn't thought of the radshroud, that's an interesting idea.

Not a bad idea at all. :-k I've seen a few subis that run carbs. You could keep the FI with a flow through set up to get rid of the Subi intake. Ducting the air out of a fake fan shroud would be a challenge, and might be to small to handle all the cooling required. Maybe use the fake shroud as an inter cooler for the inevitable turbo. :-k \:D/ \:D/ Then hide the radiator in a traditional swap location; be it bus, beetle/ghia, or type3.

Do I smell a G14 Canadian project using up valuable brain cells? :-k =D> =D>
