1957 Original paint Panel!

Postby dcguy » Wed May 02, 2012 8:18 am

Ok, I love these build off ideas and since I have about a million cars, I get to focus on one at a time! The Porsche is chilling out (starter!!), so I thought I would give this one a little love. It's just sitting in the back;

Found it last month and here's a pic on trailer;
Image

How it sits, but I filled the tires with air! The front left blew out and it showed the tube tire!!

I already 'PB' Blastered the door hinges. Check out paint on the dogleg lower!

Don't expect miracles on this one, just going to clean it. I miight buff it. If I find an engine, I miiight get it driving... oh man, this never ends :)

You know, I have some drop spindles and a spare SAK sitting around, hmm.

My poor poor 56 23 Window! It just sits and sits and I keep finding energy to work on the new arrivals, that is so not fair to that old bus.

Spent about 8 hours on the bus. New tires. Pulled splash pan (never been off before?!), pulled original master cylinder. Cleaned it up alot, and it looks almost the same! Time goes fast when you're having fun. And this is one of those never touched, fun buses.

Put a few things on, headlights a go!

Easiest bumper take off ever!

The BACK of the bumper (the rest is all like this).

Neutralize the rust. I didn't agonize too much about fixing the nose, I can't let it rust and the flaking bondo didn't look all that great

Check out the factory spot welds!

Duraglass. It's supposed to be water resistant. I'm not really good at this stuff but it's better than the dents that were there. Gonna try the blend technique!

Made a tiny mistake in buying 175/65/15's thinking they would be tall and skinny, but they're not. They're pretty low. So, I might just get some drop spindles and lower the back a tiny bit.

Stock height only looks good with big tall wheels :)

Those are perfect rear tires. Do a strait axle, 2" narrowed beam, and dropped spindles, They make a 175/55 or 165/50 front tire that works well with that rear.

I have a straight axle tranny sitting around (it's for my 23, but, that is a stalled project...). The only reason I don't want to do narrrowed front is then I need narrowed torsions, narrowed tie rods and losing 2" track on an already sketchy handling bus... well, I always wimp out :)

Owned about 20 buses, most lowered, but not a single one with a narrowed beam yet!

This is how my 21 Window Sat. 14" tires, 3.5" lowered, lowered in the back a bit. Most people wouldn't even consider this 'lowered'. :)

Do a 2" on stock wheels you'll love it. If you can get me your core beam, I'll build you all of the narrowed stuff and dropped spindles for $850. I ship it to canada is 2 boxes for less than $150 too. PM me if you are interested.

Shipping is the killer :) I will think about it, but now that I recall I did order one of the very first narrowed bug beams waaay back in KCW days.

Now it's ON!
Image

Cleaning up the back (lots to do still), and gas tank cleaned, de rusted and installed. I took it from my 23 Window :( (It was dove blue anyways so it's better for this bus anyways).

Image

What a way to spend a Saturday Afternoon! Pulling trans and cleaning, wouldn't have it any other way!
Image

This was bugging me so, of course...
Image
Image

Just haaad to open it to see. The rear close out is rusty but the inner rocker looks solid enough. We'll see what happens!!

Sweet Bus.

Nice progress. Duraglass is a bear to sand once it's cured, gonna have to get a grinder disc on that nose and skim it with some filler.
