Frustrations today!! I got my VW engine running (for me that's an accomplishment!) BUT, I had starter problems. If anyone can help??

I was testing an engine (40hp w/ 6v flywheel) on the ground. The trans was a 1969 IRS. I had 2 starters (both 6V, one a VW one Porsche high torque).

- When I install them correctly both starters squeeled, ie not catching the flywheel.
- When I loosen the bolts and engage the starter at an angle, the engine started (horrible grinding noise, but it started).

What could be the problem??

More info; The Porsche high torque has a 6V pinion and it's self supporting. The VW starter, I installed the correct bushing.

Also, I installed the engine into my Porsche 356 (644 trans) and same thing! Squeels if tightened the bolts, but engine starts if I angle the starter. What gives? I tried shimming it but it didn't work

The VW starter/bushing were ok. And the Porsche starter is 'self supporting', it doesn't need a bushing (like an auto tranny starter).

But the same thing happened in the Porsche trans! Sad end to the day!

VW engine in and running! I have the starter issue, I will contact Al Zim and see what's up. Apparently they've had issues with those starters half contacting the flywheel and they keep selling them!! [-(

How it sits after the engine weighs down the back!

Spent yesterday and today with this (mostly the starter, install remove engine two step). Oh well, I can always push start it :)

Also got alot of the electrical sorted out.

Hi guys, nothing too exciting or photographical stuff to report. The problem with living so far away from the car meccas is that parts take forever to get here, there's not much in the way of real technical help here for this old car (that I can afford anyways!).

-Brakes are bled
-Working on over the tunnel shifter as the 'monkey' motion shifter is $$$ and a little screwy

Ordered some interior bits and I'm trying to figure out the best way to do the inside.

I also want to thank KCW for having an open and free forum plus this brilliant monthly build thread idea. Ideas like this keep things fun and fresh! Never take for granted how beautiful such a simple thing can be. Just check out the snobs over on the 356 Registry, things can change VERY quickly so vigilance is required! :)

So it turned out to be a manufacturing error on the new starter?

Yup! Al Zim even said the 'early' batch of starters were defective, but lucky me must've got one. It doesn't extend far enough to allow it to catch the flywheel.

Some people posted on the Registry how the starter would 'half' engage and chew up their expensive 356 flywheels. I can send it back and they 'will look at it'. Fun.

I'm going to try a 6V starter from VW and see if it fits.

We push started it :) That's not going to go over too well with the wife. She's only 105lbs and she's just not that strong.

Oh well, nothing like pushing 1700lbs to build those muscles!!

When did this car end up in California? Did you even list it or was it behind the scenes?

He follows me around on all my posts, posts snide comments (that's being nice), and I've had enough.

I've tried to ignore some stuff, but I just read this (today) and I snapped. No apologizes, I meant what I said, it's none of his business.
