a1steaksauce's white trash parking lot camper mod

Postby a1steaksauce » Tue Jan 31, 2012 6:23 pm

been busy all month hammering on other people's projects and really just wanted to get this done...throw in getting sick into the mix and i just managed to squeeze it in 8-[

i came up on a heavy vinyl McD's banner and always wanted to do something fun with it....then the idea hit me to make an awning for my laid out baywindow. would be a perfect purist piss off item at my next local vw show

here's the money shot then i'll go over my quickie build:

Image

started off with a run to lowes to grab these:
Image

-eye hooks, hardware section
-quick release clasps, fastener section
-conduit clamps, electrical section

some minor trimming got them to attach very securely to the rain gutter.

scrounged in the leftover metal and found some plate and tubing. came up with a way to attach them to the bus to make it a self contained unit:

Image
i couldn't find the length tubing i was after at the shop. my original plan was to tie into both corners of my front bow and angle the tubes back towards the jack points. but i didn't have any tubing that was long enough to allow me to do so.

the tubing i managed to find didn't fit too snugly into the other tubing, but given the stout sidewall of both pieces of tubing i don't see it flexing too much...and some minimal movement is ok...plus free material is free.

time to get started on the front bow.
Image
i managed to find some smaller thin wall that perfectly fit into my heavy duty support legs. i welded it to some smaller tubing that i used for a front bow/support.

another trip to lowes for some more eye hooks...
Image
i went and welded them to the front bow.

installed everything:

all set up trailer trash style Smile

setup and take down is like 5 minutes at best and everything stores easily inside the bus.

well, that's my January build off contribution.

I like the "dead flowers" on the bay window

Looks like black spray over hand painted hippy flowers.

thanks. still have some work left to do on her...but she's come a long way. all i bought was beam side plates, adjusters, and those rims...everything else was hand fabbed up by me.

mine has it. but i haven't had a chance to test it yet to see if it works. i'll dig into it and let you know, thanks!

actually they're burnt off/over. when i field saved this thing i found some bondo on the body....i wanted to see what panels had bondo on them so i took my map gas to the hippy flowers on each body panel as my test spots. then i said screw it and went back and torched every hippy flower....gave the bus a 'christine' look. i'm no fan of hippy buses so the flowers were gonna be leaving one way or another lol

thanks. the front end bumper rearranging was done by the PO...among many other things. i just saved her then lowered and narrowed the piss out of her Smile

and where did i score that banner? it's not always what you know, it's who you know

oh and i voted for you. i remember working outside in the street when i lived out west and watching you hammer out a bunch of work in the dirt and cold was rather impressive.

don't know if i should be offended or grateful by your post lol...i know i'm north of kentucky but i guess by not enough 8-[

right now i'm just finishing off the bus and working on getting the 5 speed in her. nothing really "build off" worthy however.

just going to sit back a couple of months and watch you guys have at it =D>
