true but if it's a pattern you REALLY want it can be "backed" by a heavier material. the one guy i know who used actual Burberry plaid had it backed. been in the car for a few years and still looks good.

that link has several similar plaids that are furniture grade and should be fine for auto upholstery to.

Sorry to keep going off track, but this will give breathing room between offers. So yes backed material can work. Also I'd lean towards the vintage tweed as I have had pretty good luck with that. Only problem was with weave and pattern consistency so that some times a clean pattern line up was hard to get.
