New Project - 68 Double Cab

Postby 56Hotrod » Tue Sep 14, 2010 9:54 pm

I had posted about my trouble finding a split, then I found one. Went up to buy it, and it was far worse than I had imagined. With truck and trailer in tow, I worked a deal on the 68 Double Cab on the trip back.
$4500 later and she's sitting in my driveway.

I got this from a guy that works in a shop we used to go to back home. He got it 2 years ago, spent a lot of time straightening bodywork, but lost interest several months ago.

The bus is complete, yet disassembled minus the front windshield and motor. I have the motor from my 56 oval sitting in the garage disassembled, and going to use that in the bus. 2007cc motor, H beam forged rods, ported eliminator 2000 heads, and 45mm dells (need rebuilding).

I just sprayed some primer on the gates, as they were sandblasted. Next step is to get it in the garage, up on jack stands, and work the brakes (there are none).

One thing I'm unsure of, the door panels have the vent sections to go to the rear seating area - I can't find much information about them, and I'm not sure if they are really from a 68 model year.

Anyway, much work to do, the oval progress will be on hold for a few months...

DOGO,
That's them. How well do they work. I'm sure my kids would appreciate some airflow back there.

Thanks Franz, I'm sure to be asking you questions in the near future.

Looks like a very solid truck, you get the interior with it?

Good luck

Not sure. I only drove that bus for one summer, and I don't think ever with more than a driver and 1 passenger. Never had the need to open them up. Not even sure I ever tried them, to be honest. I can't imagine them being a bad thing though.

I have seen a few really cool bay windows recently. I have a new appreciation for them. I look forward to this build.

I hadn't planned on keeping those taillights. I had planned on welding them up and cutting out originals.

I finished putting the Evo back together last night, so tonight, I want to get the DC in the garage and get it on jack stands. 1st, drop suspension and see what's good.

I think 2" narrowed front, dropped spindles with adjusters, and 3 notches in the rear?

Also, inventory what I have, and get my old 2007cc type 1 out of boxes and get it ready.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Dude,
That is the look / stance I'm after. I'll have to wait on converting to discs until next spring / summer...but the drop there is just about perfect. I likey.
