Replacement "lottery" trans that we thrashed all night to swap out night before we left, thx ediddy
Was actually one thing that worked flawless the whole trip!
Ferry line up with an hour sleep and about 4-5 miles road time
Winona's big brown beaver trying to help greg diagnose a fucked motor in his 65 standard about 30 mins into Washington (Squim). Man we off to a great start!
was a 2110 with hyraulic lifters from the infamous Berni Bergman
from what could tell on side of road it busted the bore out of one of the lifters? Greg and Clara offered to use their AAA to tow it to Olympia and yank the "cragar kombi" 1600 to swap in but greg called out a huge favour and sweet talked Matt into getting on BC ferrys and drive down to rescue them with trailer! Only to load into the TDI vanagon westy and head back across the line (getting laughed at by customs)
Jrod and me kept going.....suspension settled and started to scrub the front wheel wells pretty good. we had to pull over to jack it up a notch, no sweat.
Got to Olympia and met up at Greg and Clara's got a sweet tour then rolled out with their restored 56 and Mikes OG 59 LHD RH Cargo Swedish westy.
All was well until flying down I5 Just outside of Portland...about 9pm the red light comes on! Pull over to find the alt pulley scattered all over the engine bay
all the shims and parts were in there still but the fancy aluminum CB pulley acorn nut had no threads left, FUCK! Tuned out the cheap ass Chinese T-bolt alt strap snapped causing the alternator to dance around loosening the pulley, apart she came!
Made a bunch of calls to Portland peeps and Danny Byers came to the rescue with a new stock pulley and steel strap. Super solid dude, never met him before but we owe u big buddy! Back on the road about hour and half later and onto Patrick and Rachel's farm in Salem. By time we made it there the fuel filter was plugging up, limped it in and ate/drank like hadn't in weeks
Parker in his 21 and Adam/Ally in their 356 powered wheeled 59 mango had rendevu'd there too. We took off in the AM with a killer route planned by Mr Hall in their sweet 52 CC deluxe. Pat just built a mini stroker we coined the "super25" with a 25hp case, 77mm jugs, a 69mm crank and 36 ho heads....turning it into a 1300 while looking very stock
Group was keeping a great pace of 65ish through the rain and hills....barndoor is really really loud even with earplugs and I didn't like putting muffs on cause couldn't hear the bus
really cool scenery along the coast!
Stopped at a Fred Myers to food/beer up for camping, hop back in bus, ignition key on, hit starter button and instantly starter solenoid is stuck half on grinding away, turn key off, nope still powered up run out back rip battery cable off.....wtf? Was a brand new Bosch with like 3 dozen starts on it
climb under, disconnect solenoid lug and push start it. Patrick found us a new one at autozone for 44$ in stock in Brookings where were we're headed to camp. Carry on, bit later someone was on reserve and sputtering, no problem we were carrying gas....pull over and a few feet before rolling to a stopthe right rear tire slips off a 3" drop of asphalt.....SHIT! Grind to a hault on what I thought was muffler....Jrod jumps out and instantly yells KILL IT! Just as I look at the pod and see the oil light come on! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! I feel like the biggest tool ever with 6L of oil making beautiful rainbow col_ours all over the 101 in the rain. The drain plug off the 3.5 qt sump is sitting 6" behind the rear press bumper. Parker with his fancy Hazard light late model secures the scene and we jack it up. The aluminum sump plate was chewed up along with last thread on the drain plug....quickly file the plug and try and screw back in. Instantly starts to cross thread
I close my eyes give it 2-3 waps in the right direction to straighten it out and miraculously it worked!
collectively the group had enough oil to top us off and off we went! just dodged a huge bullet, still feeling like a donkey oh well could have been much worse.
I like parkers photo bomb here!
Arrive at a very soggy campsite in brookings, have some of Clara's famous pizza pie campfire pockets for dinner, beers, stories and laughs galore. Found the starter in the morning, swapped it out in a parking lot and Dave Cormack (use to write for HotVWs) met us for a billshit in his killer oval rag. We learned that the 101 costal route though the redwoods and stuff is closed due to landslides
we had to turn back inland back through grants pass (again) Greg, Andrew and Jas had been killing time there all day after driving through the night to catch us on the 101 but was closed. bus is running good, we making good time! Make it into Corning CA and pull into an almond orchard that Patrick does some work for to camp.
We roll into Redbarn and set up camp, start drinkin
jrods wife made him this awesome shirt to wear with all things Canadian haha gotta represent!
Johnny sent us with a club to lock up his baby haha
Met loads of cool peeps and put a ton of faces to names. Swap was great got some we didn't need.
Oh shit I'm getting all crossed up here missing mark Merrills open house.....I gonna cut her here and pick up later
