I'll be the dissenter here, I love the Suby swap! Curious to see how the electronics/ECU are laid out. I wanna do this swap too but the electronics scare me.

John, This is just giving me flashbacks of the Syncro/SVX that left 2 weeks ago. I do aircooled almost exclusively, but since moving into our new place the last 12 months has brought on every limping excuse for a watercooled Vanagon in the State. The newly purchased Syncro/SVX this customer dragged to us was not a clean conversion, and after replacing the rear locker assembly and dash switch, custom throttle cable that had shorted out on the starter terminal, seeping coolant lines, completely missing CV mounted speed sensor, a fabricated steel plate brace to support the rusted off gas tank strap and ultimately the whole Final drive with a bad Viscous clutch (my local machinist pulled us out with one he had been saving for 20 years), it drove away with my suggestion they sell it before something else they could not afford broke. These Westies are awesome, the Subaru conversions even more so when done right, but this lady had no idea what kind of commitment is involved in keeping one on on the road. She does now! Kevin is the right man to own and make the ultimate one happen. This will make the news once your shop is done perfecting it!

Those dash lights are cool. The far left is the expensive one to get working.

My bet is that Franz is going to love this. A new challenge. A new way to show-case his style. A new skill/trade to hone. I'm looking forward to watching this go down.

Can't wait to watch. =D> =D>

I try to turn away vanagons when they come to KCW. :-$ Usually because they broke down driving through town.

...but this isn't a regular vanagon.

We're building the most badass VW off road camper. I can get on board with that. Long frustrating days ahead. I am prepared and welcome the challenge.

But the answer is still "No". We don't work on vanagons.

Well, it's been running like this for years, so it has to be something simple..

I just want to get it running again, because we have this great vacation planned.

And i'm in a big hurry.
And I don't have any money..

You can hook me up, right, Bro?

I noticed this engine was missing the ECU. I contacted Greg at Boxxer who sold us the engine. He says "yeah, that is part of the harness/ECU kit for another $3800, and you need to send me the engine wire harness to modify."

I'm thinking "Yeah, you know I have to have that, why didn't you sell it to me the first time?" ](*,)

Anyhow, I spent the day carefully removing and documenting parts/connections so that I can send the engine wire harness back to Boxxer. I think it may have been easier to modify the harness with it attached to the engine. The harness was buried under the intake, and zip tied every 2". My hands are scratched and stabbed bloody.

Or if he would have asked " do you need the harness to make it run". #-o

Yeah, I need to find a 04 or 05 forester/impreza 2.5l accelerator pedal assembly. I went to all the local junk yards this morning, no luck.

Ebay used part, but still need to locate a wire plug/pigtail.

I'm going to contact this guy in Denver. http://www.subierecycler.com

Drive by wire, dam! Nobody in the aftermarket/swap world does that cause responsibility reasons and lawyer happy people. I think it's a badass idea, I dig it a lot!!
