Frame swapped 72' F-100

Postby Critter1 » Mon Feb 20, 2017 10:57 am

Swapping F-100 trucks onto a Crown Vic frame/drive train is getting more popular lately since police departments are going to Dodge Chargers or Ford Explorers. Means more Crown Vics are out there for the taking... cheap. The wheel bases are nearly identical to short bed F-100 trucks. I'd been following this guy on YouTube doing this 72 F100 swap onto a 2008 CV frame. The truck started out as a long bed work truck. Now its a solid reliable daily with police package, factory 3:55 posi rear end, upgraded sway bars, stiffer springs, external oil cooler, and 18" Mustang wheels. He put it up for sale and I bit. Flew down to North Hollywood and drove it back to Sac, no problems. I've been wanting a bump side for a long time!

Now its my turn to tweak on it. Gonna get some AC going in it. Need to get a half kit with under dash parts and vents from Restomod Air. The Crown Vic AC stuff is still on the motor. Also need to mess with some panel alignment, weld up a bunch of holes and order some misc small parts. Should be fun!

That's sick! My buddy back home has a 68 shortbed that his dad bought new. A few years ago we pulled the front end out of a cop car Crown Vic and he swapped it in (super easy I'm told). I had no idea the whole frame could be swapped out though, that's awesome!

Yeah the front ends are a fairly easy swap.

I'm loving the frame swap! Aluminum A arm, rack & pinion, 4 wheels discs, four link posi rear end, fuel injection, killer stance with a factory CV ride. No brainer!

The only down side is you lose some bed space due to the CV rear suspension and gas tank.

That's sick!!! Good use of old cop cars too!! Wink

Find another bed and weld it in raised, so it will be a full bed but all will be higher.

Maybe Subaru parts could fix it?

Thanks Andy. I don't mind the box in the middle of the bed. If I raised the whole floor I'd lose even more bed space. If i was to do this swap on another project, I'd use a different tank and fit it between the frame rails in the back.

I 2nd this. It would be like a Honda ridgeline time two. My wife had a Ridgeline for a while and that trunk in the bed is Awesome! I don't know why no one else has put a trunk in a truck yet. Dual opening tailgate was great too.

Even with the raised floor the bed is probably as deep as a singlecab, lol. Looks awesome man, now you can take me for a ride in YOUR truck!

Will do Aaron!

First order of business is new scrapers and felt channels AKA "anti-rattle kit". Going down the road sounds like your a couple of pennies in a tin can. Also copious amounts of Dyna-Mat, that I have left over from the Notch build, for the doors... and new window seals.. its winter and they leak.

Is anyone really a fan of Ford's?

Even though I am not a Ford lover, this truck is badass!!

What are you talking about?!? Ford is the only vehicle to build a proper hot rod out of.

Prewar/flathead era 1929-1951

I've kind of gotten into flathead fords over the last few years...I think because VW stuff has gotten so ridiculous, too expensive, too hard to find, too many people looking, too many craigslist flippers. Too much bullshit. I'm out. You guys can fight about stupid VW stuff...just pay me to fix them for you. Smile

Haha! Smile There's a whole other car world out there other than the peoples car. You're right Franz, the VW world can get and has been getting pretty ridiculous!
