I really want to drop the trans like the BBOE. I want this to sit level. Problem is my welding skills are not that great especially upside down. Not sure how Pat did it on John's bus. Plus I am a bit intimidated that I may screw it up. I don't want to trash my keeper bus. I have had this one for 4 years, some sort of record for me. I plan to keep it. I love commercial buses especially bullet double doors.

Any welding technique suggestions?

Instead of dropping the whole cradle why not just drop the trans and clearance where you need to?

Keep it simple Scott and leave the suspension alone. Make it drive down the road!!

I wanted to drop it like Sled did on his old Kombi. He left the cradle intact and sunk the trans horns down into the cradle. It was super clean how he did it. I have tried contacting him thru here and samba with no luck.

I had a friend do it for me. He was out of work during the housing crash so I flipped him some cash to do it. He was a talented guy.

Scott, don't get all crazy on us.

I think the cradle makes a nice sump protector. If you're planning an external sump.

Checked the tracking on my tires today. FedEx shows they should be here by the end of the day thursday \:D/

That's great but the rims aren't ready. So I rushed a set of 6 crows feet rims to the local Les Schwab for powder coating. Only $152 and I should have them back a week from Friday.

So I started pulling the axles off the original trans as I am planning to keep it small nut since I have new brake parts and reduction box bearings etc. they are the 1:1.39 ratio ones.

I am on the fence what trans to use. I have two zero mile rebuilt ones sitting on the shelf. One is a 3.88, .82 4th, super diff, side plate, welded 3rd and 4th etc etc. I had it built for the long bus a year ago in anticipation of a Subaru backing it. The other is a 4.12, with .82 4th, super diff, side plate, welded 3rd and 4th, etc. Not sure which to use. I am going to throw a used 1600 motor in this bus until I can afford to build something a little bigger. I am assuming the 4.12 will be what I use. Plus the tires are 28.5" tall so I think the 4.12 will work fine. [-o< Building this for daily driving and off-roading. Not trying to break any land speed records.

Any thoughts on this are welcome. That way I can save my expensive 3.88 trans for the long bus if it doesn't sell.

Also, anyone out there have the locking snap ring that goes on the end of a bus axle to retain the upper/outer reduction box bearing? I am also looking for the two plastic flower things that go under the axle tubes. Mine are dicked up and broken.

Yeah, I'd stick with the 4.12 trans. That's a lot of tire.

So I guess they gave you the $25 deal on powder coat?

Yes. The guy quoted me $70 a piece over the phone. So when I showed up there today he tried to do the same crap. I called him on that bullshit. I let him know that I called 3 other locations today and they all said it starts at $25 a rim and goes up based on color etc. Then I showed him the receipt you sent me a picture of. Haha. The manager stepped in and made it right. I think the guy is just lazy.

Thanks for the help today Zac

Scott, I'll get you some pictures. If I have some, I'll post at work today. If not I'll get some taken and post up.
